Thank you to Director Swindler and the SC Criminal Justice Academy for hosting the Silver Bears! đŸ»đŸš”

This month the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy started something that Director Jackie Swindler hopes to continue for a while.

On September 1st, the first Tuesday of the month, about 45 Silver Bears enjoyed a delicious breakfast cooked up by Kitchen Supervisor Minnie Davis and staff. While it is usually frowned upon to feed the bears, Chief Swindler made an exception to these retired South Carolina State Troopers who gave themselves the title of Silver Bears.

The Silver Bears have been meeting for breakfast on the first Tuesday of every month for 20 years. Organizer Gary Sowell said this is a great why to stay connected to fellow law enforcement that have become family over the years.

The South Carolina Troopers Association extends our condolences to the family of Deputy Michael Hendricks as well as his coworkers at the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

We keep his loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is deeply saddened to confirm the passing of 33-year-old Charleston County Deputy Michael Hendricks, who was involved in a vehicle collision Wednesday, September 9, 2026, while on duty. Deputy Hendricks joined the Sheriff’s Office in April of 2023, and most recently served as a member of our Metro Unit.

This news has deeply affected all of us. Deputy Hendricks was known for showing up every day ready to serve and ready to help others—that commitment didn’t stop when he went home.

We are grieving alongside his family, friends, and coworkers, and ask our community to keep them in their thoughts. Out of respect for the family, we will share additional information when appropriate.
