Sowing Seeds into the Midlands Sowing Seeds into the Midlands provides a variety of critical support services to troubled and delinquent teens living in the South Carolina Midlands region.

The brainchild of former South Carolina juvenile probation officer Zakiya Esper, Sowing Seeds into the Midlands is a 501(c)3 organization that stands in the gap for youth who've been stigmatized by their involvement with the criminal justice system. Based in Columbia, South Carolina, Seeds offers programming for any youth who could benefit from positive influences through peer workshops and ongoing mentorship.

A couple of weeks ago we hosted Seeds Feeds 50, an initiative created to soften the blow of the disruption in SNAP benefits for the families we serve. Many teens who come into contact with the justice system are also navigating food insecurity, and our intersectional approach recognizes that hungry children and parents cannot be at their best.

Through simple word of mouth, texts and phone calls we were able to provide 17 grocery gift cards valued at $100 each, more than 60 plates, fresh collard greens and sweet potatoes to Midlands families of teens. We are grateful to Brookland Baptist Church Banquet & Conference Center and Farmasis for partnering with us to make this possible.

Thank you to our donors, organizers and the Seeds teens who showed up to make sure this got done.

We hope to do it again soon. We got us! 🌱

Today is Earth Day 2025! 🌎 This year’s theme is "Our power, our planet," an idea centered on taking action through education, advocacy and community support.

In our work to disrupt the school to prison pipeline we discovered that many community service sites in our community require a chaperone and that is a barrier to completion of one of the most commonly court ordered stipulations in our area. We provide a common sense response to that need and we do that by making brave space in Skylar's Garden.

Skylar's Garden is a youth service space that gives justice involved youth the opportunity to build and maintain a community garden. The garden is named in honor of our former Seeds program participant who passed away in a tragic car accident in August of 2016. This service space will help our participants gain job readiness, sustainability and self sufficiency skills. The crops are donated to community and some are sold. The profits are filtered back into our organization to help sustain our programming and our service project participants sometimes even receive a stipend for their participation and contribution.

Through the garden and our Sustainability Project, Seeds is committed to exposing our teens to technology and tools that will not only support us in protecting the environment but also provides valuable sustainable skills that our teens can apply in their careers and day to day lives.

Skylar’s Garden is more than soil and seeds; it’s a legacy of second chances, built in memory of a young life gone too soon. This year for Midlands Gives, honor Skylar’s spirit by planting hope with us. Your gift will fund stipends, sustainability tools, and continued growth for the youth we serve. 🌱
