Alston Wilkes Society

Alston Wilkes Society A nonprofit organization dedicated to serving offenders, former offenders, Veterans & at-risk youth

The Alston Wilkes Society is composed of four programs that work to build a safer community for us all. Those programs include: four Residential Reentry Centers, eight Community Service offices throughout South Carolina, a high-management youth home in Columbia, and two transitional facilities for homeless veterans and offices providing Supportive Services for Veteran Families. The Community Servi

ce Program carries on the original AWS mission assisting offenders, former offenders, family members and homeless individuals in rebuilding their lives as productive, law-abiding members of the community. Case management and coordination of services helps clients make a successful transition into society having a positive effect on crime reduction and prevention. From crisis to stability, the journey home happens one step at a time. 🏠

For a veteran facing housing instability, finding home is rarely a single moment.

It can begin with uncertainty about where to go next.

Then comes connection. A plan. Help navigating housing options. Support overcoming barriers. A safe place to land. And, with continued support, the opportunity to build greater stability for the future.

UNCERTAINTY → SUPPORT → HOUSING → STABILITY → HOPE

That’s what Help a Veteran Find Home is about.

It’s not simply helping someone get through today. It’s helping create a foundation from which they can begin building tomorrow.

As we work toward our $25,000 goal by Labor Day, you can be part of that journey.

A special thank you to the members of Alpha Omega Phi Military Fraternity & Sorority, Inc. (Trendsetters Spirits ) for spending their Saturday morning with the Veterans at our Columbia Veterans Home and hosting a wonderful pancake breakfast. Their generosity, fellowship, and commitment to community service helped make the morning a memorable one for our Veterans. We are grateful for organizations like Alpha Omega Phi that continue to invest in and support those who have served our nation.

Because of you, we’re making progress. 🏠

Thanks to the generosity of donors and supporters, we have now raised $5,275 toward our $25,000 Help a Veteran Find Home goal!

Every gift, every share, and every person who helps spread the word is moving this campaign forward. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has already stepped up to support veterans working toward safe, stable housing.

But there is still more work to do. We have $19,725 left to raise by Labor Day, and we need more people to join us.

As America celebrates 250 years, help us honor those who served in a meaningful way. Together, we can help a veteran find home.

It takes a community to help someone rebuild a life.

We're grateful to our partners at Pathways Community Center for featuring Alston Wilkes Society in their latest article, "More Than a Card: Why an ID Can Change Everything."

Pathways Community Center serves as a collaborative hub where nonprofits and service providers work together to connect individuals experiencing poverty and homelessness with the resources they need to achieve long-term stability and self-sufficiency. Their mission is built on the belief that collaboration creates better outcomes for everyone.

The article highlights an often-overlooked barrier: obtaining a government-issued ID. For many of the individuals we serve, something as simple as an ID can become the key to employment, housing, healthcare, banking, and a fresh start.

A special thank you to Pathways Community Center and author Karl Vogl II for shining a light on this important issue and on the collaborative work happening every day to help people move forward.

If you're on Facebook, we'd love for you to help us thank Pathways Community Center by giving them a follow and sharing their incredible work.

This is Jeffrey. Yesterday he got his state issued ID. This might seem a small accomplishment to many but this took weeks and hours of phone calls, multiple visits to various locations including Social Security, DHEC Vital Records, a medical clinic, and the DMV to finally acquire all the necessary documents. Imagine trying to do that on your own if you are homeless. Thanks to the persistence of our Ministry Associate Michelle Nixon and Angela Willingham with our partner organization, Alston Wilkes Society, Jeffrey has a smile and an ID.
