A job he loved. A home of his own. A new chapter filled with possibility.
When Mr. J arrived at the AWS Veterans’ Home in Greenville, he had lost his job and apartment. He also lacked the important documents needed to move forward—including his birth certificate, Social Security card, military discharge paperwork, and photo ID.
With determination and support from AWS staff, he began rebuilding.
He worked with his case managers to replace his documents and connect with housing assistance through the VA’s HUD-VASH program. While applying for jobs himself, he also received résumé and job-search support from Goodwill Industries and SC Works.
His efforts paid off: Mr. J secured a job at a local pet grooming and boarding resort—a role he was thrilled to find because he loved working with animals.
After five months at the Veterans’ Home, he moved into an apartment within walking distance of his job, with his important documents in hand and connections to people and resources to support his next chapter.
On World Homeless Day, his story reminds us what determination, practical support, and a caring community can make possible.
