More than 60 advocates, alderpeople, and housing and service providers gathered outside City Hall this morning to call on city leaders to include $30 million in the FY2027 city budget to prevent 3,000 Chicagoans from losing their homes amid drastic federal funding cuts and unexpected shortfalls in local housing programs.

For this round, we were only able to accept 400 applications. If you submitted an application, you can expect to hear back on the status of your application within 30 days. Please note that submission of an application is not a guarantee of funding. All applications will be randomized via lottery and then reviewed for eligibility by a committee of grassroots leaders.

CCH and our partners, especially those in Protect Our Care Illinois, are deeply concerned by the upcoming changes to the Medicaid program, affecting the health coverage of hundreds of thousands of low-income Illinoisans. Starting October 1, noncitizen adults will lose Medicaid coverage. Additionally, almost 700,000 Illinoisans will face new strict work requirements and all Medicaid recipients will be required to submit extra documentation to keep their insurance coverage starting in January, burdens that will block access to life-saving care for the most vulnerable among us.

These changes are part of a series of harmful changes dictated by the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” (H.R. 1) passed by Congress in July 2025, and mirror a nationwide increase in hostility towards immigrants, low-income people, and people experiencing homelessness.

Housing and health are inextricably linked. For those experiencing homelessness and housing instability, access to health care is an essential requirement for long-term stability and can quite literally be a matter of life and death.

We need a local government that shows up for our communities. Join our coalition of community organizations and concerned Chicagoans next Thursday to demand City Council fund housing in the 2027 city budget!

More than 50,000 people experience homelessness in Chicago each year—whether that’s sleeping outside, on couches, or in shelters. We need more affordable housing, not less. But right now, 3,000 people are at risk of losing their housing due to federal cuts and shortfalls in funding for local programs. We need consistent, local funding to ensure stability for our neighbors.

🚨 The Edrika Fulford Mutual Aid Fund is reopening on Tuesday, October 6 at 10 am! 🚨

One-time emergency grants of $500 will be given to 100 individuals or families experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. Only one application per household—multiple applications from the same household will be disqualified.

Applications will be entered into a lottery and undergo a review process. Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee funding.

Undocumented individuals and permanent residents are welcome to apply.
