This week’s Prophets portion is a repeat of an earlier portion. The portion for Noach covering Isaiah 54:1-55:5 is read a second time on two subsequent Sabbaths: Isaiah 54:11-55:5 for the portion of Re’eh and Isaiah 54:1-10 for the portion of Ki Teitzei. Rather than record three separate programs on the same section of the Prophets, we decided to re-post the discussion from earlier in the year covering this week’s Prophets portion. Enjoy!

This week’s Prophet Pearls repeat reading—traditionally called the Haftorah—is Isaiah 54:1–10. It accompanies the Torah portion Ki Teitzei (Deuteronomy 21:10–25:19).

Employing the imagery of marriage and childbirth, God reassures His people of their ultimate restoration and growth. Although He has put away His wife, Israel, for a short time, with everlasting faithfulness He will take her back, never again to be separated from her.

This week’s Prophet reading—traditionally called the Haftorah—is Isaiah 51:12–52:12. It accompanies the Torah portion Shoftim (Deuteronomy 16:18–21:9).

In this passage God encourages His people not to fear, despite the threats of their enemies. Although He has punished His people for their disobedience, He will liberate and restore them. The prophet announces peace and salvation, which will come when God returns to Zion as her King.

If we are not to make a sacred pillar, why was Jacob’s pillar accepted? Must we always have two or three witnesses? Who has the authority today? Are we guilty of rejecting Yehovah as King? I am excited to share that the response to Ezra, our BFAi Research and Study Assistant, has been overwhelmingly positive. While that’s encouraging, what I’d really like is your honest feedback.

This is the second Prophet section of what is traditionally called the Haftorah reading that accompanies the Torah portion of Noach (Genesis 6:1–6:8). This weeks reading is Isaiah 54:11-55:5 .

In this passage, God draws on the imagery of the waters of Noah to assure His people that His love and compassion will never be removed from them. And to those who heed His admonition and turn to Him He promises to make an everlasting covenant.

Can one worship the true God without adhering to His commandments? What about altars other than the main altar? Who exactly were the corrupt men of “beliya’al”? Where is the son of God mentioned in the Old Testament? What kind of birds are the ra’ah & the da’ah? How can we possibly understand the deep and complex riddle, “Do not boil a kid in its mother’s milk”? Are there three tithes or only one? When did the Israelites leave Egypt, by day or by night?

This week’s Prophet reading—traditionally called the Haftorah—is Isaiah 49:14–51:3. It accompanies the Torah portion Eikev (Deuteronomy 7:12–11:25).

In this passage the prophet Isaiah gives reassurance of God’s unfailing love. To a personified Jerusalem He says, “I never could forget you.” Those who pursue righteousness and seek God are admonished to consider God’s faithfulness to Abraham.
