Pi Kappa Phi

Pi Kappa Phi Pi Kappa Phi is a national men's fraternity founded in 1904. We are now 160,000+ members. Those three men chose to start their own fraternity.

On a quiet December evening in 1904 in Charleston, S.C., three friends—Andrew Kroeg, Simon Fogarty and Harry Mixson—made a choice to lead. The three grew to seven; seven grew to eight; eight grew to 11. From the College of Charleston, they spread to nearby Presbyterian in 1907—and then to California in 1909. In just over four years, Pi Kappa Phi had become a truly national fraternity. Over the cou

rse of a century, a fraternity with humble beginnings has grown into a brotherhood of more than 120,000 strong—all because three men made a choice to lead. The Non-Fraternity
Our founding was certainly not without setbacks. In fact, Pi Kappa Phi was originally founded as Nu Phi, which stood for "non-fraternity." Our founders, disillusioned with campus politics being run exclusively by fraternities, created Nu Phi as a means to attain leadership roles within the Chrestomathic Literary Society. However, the attempt to seize control of the Society was thwarted when some of the Nu Phis proved to be disloyal. The loyal Nu Phis regrouped, and on the evening of December 10, 1904, the seven remaining men created a new group—to be known as Pi Kappa Phi. To this day, Pi Kappa Phi embraces its Nu Phi heritage. It manifests itself in various way and emboldens us as Pi Kappa Phis to confront issues with fresh, new approaches.

Sowing the seeds of service. 👨‍🌾

Associate members at California-Santa Barbara spent the morning getting their hands dirty alongside the Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade at Yankee Farm, helping grow fresh produce that will go right back into the community. From cultivating land for carrots and zucchini to learning sustainable farming techniques, these brothers showed that service sometimes looks like hard work under the sun.

A good reminder that making an impact doesn’t always happen in a meeting room or at an event. Sometimes it starts in the dirt.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Did you know Founder Mixson’s mother, Hannah Quirollo Mixson, was known as the “Mother of the Fraternity”? Nu Phi meetings were held in her home at 190 Wentworth Street, where many of the early plans for what would become Pi Kappa Phi were developed before our founding on December 10, 1904.

Swipe to see more Pi Kapp mothers! From our earliest days to today, mothers have played an important role in brothers' lives and in the story of our Fraternity. Today, we celebrate them and thank them for their love, support and encouragement.

Refounding his chapter and redefining what philanthropy looks like. 🤝

Congratulations to Seth Huteson, Eta Rho (Texas State), this year’s Thomas Sayre Philanthropist of the Year Award recipient. From raising $20,000 for The Ability Experience to building partnerships and recruiting 21 brothers for Ability Camp, his impact speaks for itself. And he’s not done yet. Huteson is heading to Ability Camp Honduras later this month to help build a clinic in Comayagua.

Campus legends were made this semester. 🏆

From the turf to the rink, these brothers put the rest of campus on notice. Delta Tau (James Madison) and Theta Iota (Washington State) both went back-to-back in intramural football, proving dynasties aren’t just for the pros. Then Epsilon Chi (Denver) took over the ice in their second annual interfraternity philanthropy hockey game, bringing home the win while helping raise $50,000 for The Huntsman Cancer Foundation.

Campus involvement looks a little different when Pi Kapps are involved. Competing, raising money and making memories with their brothers, these chapters showed up in a big way all semester long.
