Did you know that 80% of a child's brain develops by age three? Yet so many families in our community still don't have access to affordable, high-quality childcare. In North Carolina, infant care costs nearly $14,000 a year, and fewer than 15% of eligible children receive financial assistance — leaving parents unable to work full-time, or forced to cut their hours just to make childcare work.

Since 2019, Freedom Communities has partnered with Bright Future Learning Center, providing space, support, and resources on our campus to help expand affordable childcare right here in West Charlotte.
We're deeply grateful to the Dukes Family, Mite Organization, Smart Start of Mecklenburg County, First Presbyterian Church of Charlotte and many other partners who walk alongside us in this work.
Breaking cycles of generational poverty starts with caring for our community's youngest members. When we invest in early childhood, we're investing in the future of our city.

At Freedom Communities, our mission is to partner with neighbors in the Freedom–Wilkinson Corridor to create opportunities in education, housing, employment, and wellness that lead to holistic transformation and a thriving community.

We use the word "neighbors" intentionally.

Neighbors are the people next door. The families we pass at the bus stop. The faces we see walking down the street. Yet in a world that often feels disconnected, many of us barely know the people living around us.

That's why Friday night's Block Party at Evoke Westerly Hills was so special.

Despite the hottest day of the year, more than 150 residents came together for kids' games, hot dogs, ice cream, music, laughter, and—most importantly—the chance to connect with one another.

A thriving community isn't built only through buildings and programs. It's built through neighbors getting to know neighbors.

Thank you to S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co., Apartment Life, Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte NC, and First Presbyterian Church of Charlotte for helping make this evening possible. We loved seeing neighbors connect, and we can't wait to do it again soon!

Remember that last day of school feeling from when you were a kid? 🎉

No more early wake-ups, no more homework, no more tests! Lots of kids in Charlotte woke up with that feeling over the past few weeks.

But for many families in the Freedom-Wilkinson Corridor, the last day of school also marks the start of a season filled with real challenges — fewer meals, less access to learning, and longer days with fewer resources.

That's why we're so grateful for our friends at Nucor and SHARE Charlotte who put together 500 summer snack and learning bags for families in our programs. These bags are heading home with kids who need them most — packed with snacks to curb hunger and learning materials to keep young minds growing.

Thank you to Nucor, SHARE Charlotte, and so many other partners who provide resources so our families can keep thriving all summer long. ☀️

We are excited to announce that we're launching a Dads Moving Forward Program, and we need a Coach to help lead the way!

Our Family Success Coaches help guide families in our programs toward sustainable progress. This is not a traditional case management role; it is a coaching-centered position focused on building trust, unlocking potential, and helping families chart a path toward long-term self-sufficiency.

We are looking for someone who is a motivator, a listener and a skilled connector. If this sounds like you, reach out and let's have a conversation.

It's official — we broke ground on our campus expansion - including the new Fioretti-Sankey Community Building! 🎉

At Freedom Communities we spend a lot of time talking about housing, childcare, workforce development, financial stability—all the things that matter and that we've got great data on.

But when we ask families we work with what impacts them the most, they overwhelmingly talk about finding people who believed in them. They talk about friendships. About encouragement. About realizing they weren't alone. About gaining the confidence to pursue goals they never thought were possible.

One Moms Moving Forward Participant told us, "Having people believe in me gave me the motivation I needed to believe in myself again."

Ultimately that's what our work is about - It’s why this building and this expansion matters.
We believe we broke ground on more than just a new building. We are building room for more children to have opportunities to thrive, more families to have access to resources and support, and more neighbors to have a place to gather, learn, and belong.

Nobody clocks in. Nobody clocks out. No sick days. No days off. Just showing up — every single day — for the people who need you most. That's motherhood. 💛

The women in our Moms Moving Forward program know this better than anyone. They are doing the hard work of raising the next generation while building a better life for their families at the same time.

Last month, Elevation Church - Uptown opened their doors and said "We see you, we want to celebrate you" — and for a few minutes a group of moms got to take a minute for themselves and for each other. It was beautiful!

Thank you, Elevation Church, for hosting a great event that showed these incredible women that their hard work doesn't go unnoticed. You reminded them that their community sees them, values them, and is cheering them on.

This is what neighborhood partnership looks like. We are so grateful. 🙏

Every month, every State Employees' Credit Union member contributes $1 to the SECU Foundation. Over 22 years, those individual dollars have grown into more than $300 million in community impact.

Last week Freedom Communities felt that impact firsthand.

We are deeply honored that the SECU Foundation Foundation chose to invest $350,000 in our capital campaign to expand economic opportunity and community transformation in West Charlotte's Freedom-Wilkinson Corridor.

And they didn't just write a check. Team members from the SECU Foundation and Charlotte-area SECU branches showed up and spent the day in our neighborhood— beautifying our community, engaging in conversation about issues, and deepening the kind of partnership that makes real change possible.
