QC Family Tree

QC Family Tree uses cultural organizing to build community for the common good.

Since 2005, QC Family Tree has been working for justice from the corner of Parkway and Tuckaseegee in west Charlotte. We use the tools and methods of cultural organizing to build power within Black communities, primarily the Enderly Park neighborhood where we are located. We use cultural organizing to work with white congregations and other community organizations to disrupt and dismantle white supremacy.

🎆 Join us Sunday, July 5 from 5-7pm for Funeral for the Empire: a direct alternative to the Nationalism and Imperialism of the season.

🐊 We'll be using our time to learn about a group of people from NC that used the land to resist. The Maroons saw the Great Dismal Swamp as a refuge to escape captivity and other perilous conditions. The environment was so hostile (gators, damp, snakes, mosquitoes, biting flies, bears, feral pigs, etc) that those who went deep enough in wouldn't be followed. They used this freedom to establish completely undetected independent communities in the wilderness.

We'll spend the evening at stepping into their stories. We'll take time to understand exactly how they defeated the Empire. And we'll celebrate their success.

Through storytelling, music, movement, art-making, and shared ceremony, participants journey together from lament to liberation, honoring resilience, community, wellness, and hope.

🎨 Please join us in welcoming our second Mural Apprentice, Sundiata, a street/sketch artist typically working with letter forms and spray paint.

"My work translates into a lot of emotions. I love to use colors as a medium to demonstrate the way I am feeling."

For Sundiata, art has not just been a hobby, but a way to to process the range of feelings that come up to the surface in everyday life.

Sundiata is one of two artists receiving mentorship this summer from the amazing , with professional development and Lift Certification. We're excited to celebrate and support these emerging creatives as they learn, grow, and leave a lasting mark on our neighborhood.

📣 CALL TO ARTISTS! The 'Main Character Energy' exhibition submission portal is now open. This exhibition will celebrate bold expression, street culture, fashion, graphic aesthetics, pop influence, and the art forms shaping how people see and represent themselves today.

We are looking for work that is vibrant, imaginative, personal, disruptive, playful, rooted, and unapologetically visible. A collection of works that best fit the space and theme will be selected. Show opens July 22 at The Arts Factory and runs through September 21.

Submission deadline is Tuesday, July 7 at 11:59pm. Link in bio.

🎨 Our Summer Mural Cohort is about to kick off! Two artists are receiving mentorship from , professional development, and Lift Training & Certification (a $350 value), equipping them with skills that open doors to future mural opportunities.

Please join us in welcoming our first Mural Apprentice, ! Tao Donyeé is an oil painter examining the hidden beauty within everyday life. Through his paintings, he lends viewers his perspective while holding a mirror to his culture, revealing both its depth and its imperfections.

Rather than simply capturing what he sees, Tao paints how he sees, infusing each piece with emotion, intention, and spirit. Guided by purpose, his work is created not only to captivate, but to inspire reflection and action.

We're so excited to be bringing the Mural Cohort back! By investing in artists, we can strengthen our local creative economy, beautify the Freedom-Wilkinson Corridor, and build meaningful community connections all at the same time.

🛍 Can't wait to see you all this Saturday from 12-2pm for the next Rhizome Arts Market at Marian House!! It's going to be a wonderful afternoon filled with art, community, and conversation.

⭐ Michelle "Bunny" Gregory () is our MURAL MENTOR heading up the Mural Apprenticeship program.

Bunny is a Charlotte-based mixed-media artist, muralist, and community arts advocate whose work explores racial equity, cultural preservation, and community connection. Influenced by Afrocentric culture, hip-hop, pop art, and storytelling, she creates vivid artwork that celebrates Black identity.

Her commitment to arts access extends through public art projects, youth programming, and initiatives such as the UNDERGROUND Mobile Art Studio & Gallery. She is a master at using creativity as a tool for empowerment, dialogue, and community building. And we're so thankful she is sharing her talent and passion with us this summer in this role for the second time. 💜

🌿 COMMUNITY ART MAKING! On Saturday, June 13 from 12-2pm, during the Rhizome Arts Market, we will have educational materials and a video about the Maroon communities of the Great Dismal Swamp in North Carolina. We'll be making art together to symbolize their experience. This art will be then be used for the upcoming Funeral for the Empire on July 5th.

Take a little creative dive into North Carolina history with us!
