Charleston Parks Conservancy

Charleston Parks Conservancy When parks thrive, people thrive. Parks bring people together.

As Charleston grows, reclaiming, rejuvenating, nurturing, and advancing the use of public parks is of the utmost importance. A feeling of kinship and stewardship with parks creates a shared sense of place among our neighbors and fellow citizens. The Charleston Parks Conservancy works to create, expand, sustain, and reinvigorate Charleston’s urban parks to ensure that Charleston will be a wondrous,

welcoming and active place now, and for future generations. To accomplish our goal of improving and preserving public parks, we foster partnerships throughout the Charleston area. With these resources, expert staff and a passionate corps of volunteers, the Park Angels, work side-by-side to rejuvenate parks and create opportunities for community engagement through park programs. By rallying support and catalyzing action, the Charleston Parks Conservancy cultivates stunning city parks. We believe that high quality parks contribute to a higher quality of life, and great parks build strong communities.

Our popular evening volunteer opportunity is returning to Colonial Lake this summer!

Join our Director of Volunteer Engagement, Collin Howell, as he hosts weekly volunteer sessions at Colonial Lake on Wednesday evenings from 5-7pm, starting June 3rd and running through August 5th.
From 5-6pm, assist with weeding and general park maintenance around the lake, followed by a fun social afterwards from 6-7pm.

All tools will be provided and no prior experience is required. We hope to see some familiar faces and some newcomers join us at our first session - June 3rd!

Our board members take the parks! 🌳🪏

Throughout the past few months, our Director of Horticulture, Kellen Goodell, assigned each Conservancy board member with 1 to 2 parks to tour alongside him and invest time in. Kellen guided each member around their respective park, sharing the history, the Conservancy’s role and answering any questions that arose.

These members will continue to engage with their parks throughout the year, so make sure to say hello and thank you if you see them out and about!

Check out photos from a few of the tours!

Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning to officially open the Ashleyville-Maryville Food Forest!

We were grateful to have many speakers who have been instrumental in the completion of this park, including Representative Gilliard, Council member Tinkler, local residents and historians Diane Hamilton and Marsha Higgins, Alysann Sieren on behalf of Bank of America, one of our largest corporate donors for the space, as well as our our Executive Director, Jason Kronsberg.

Inspired by the mission of the food forest and the history of the neighborhood, fruit trees were given away on-site, courtesy of Charleston Trees.

We cannot thank the community enough for their investment in this project from day one, especially , seen here cutting the ribbon, for bringing the idea to install a food forest in this neighborhood to the Conservancy.

As the plantings continue to mature, we hope the community will gather and harvest in this space for years to come!

We are so grateful for our amazing intern from Charleston Collegiate, Lyla Gray, who spent every Wednesday of the school year volunteering with us at Corrine Jones and Medway community gardens! 🍅🥕

For her final project, she made some easy-to-spot, colorful plant labels for our community plots. She’ll be heading to Clemson in the fall! 🐅

Good luck and thank you Lyla!
