📖 Our Story Began in 1936, and the Impact Continues ✨
Established in Charleston on October 14, 1936 by a dedicated group of community volunteers led by Mrs. Fred G. Sahlmann, ABVI was founded with a simple but powerful purpose: to help people with vision loss lead fuller, more independent lives.
Through the years, ABVI has supported independence through vision rehabilitation, recreation, and employment opportunities such as chair caning and medical transcription.
Today, ABVI is the premier organization in the state providing comprehensive vision rehabilitation services for individuals of all ages. As ABVI looks toward its next chapter, we remain focused on expanding opportunities for individuals who are blind or low vision to live, learn, and earn.

Calling all students!📣 We're inviting YOU to celebrate ABVI's 90th Anniversary with us by participating in the 90 for 90 challenge.🎉

Throughout October, we’re challenging students across the state to collectively complete 90 Acts of Independence. 💪 An act can be big or small:
🌟learning a new route
🌟practicing a new braille symbol
🌟advocating for an accommodation
🌟or tackling something new!
Every act counts!

Providers, parents, and students can submit accomplishments throughout the month as we work together to reach 90.

This hands-on vision efficiency lab explores a range of lighting, magnification, and contrast tools to maximize functional vision and reduce eye strain. You will have the opportunity to test out a curated selection of gear and gadgets to discover what is possible and explore which setup best supports your independence in both home and work. 🤓

Will you join us online this Thursday for Early Literacy: Books, Braille and your Baby? 📖
Learn how to foster early literacy skills through touch, listening, and meaningful interactions at home. Together, we'll explore braille books, story boxes, and tactile storytelling techniques that help young children who are blind or low vision engage with books and language. We'll also demonstrate practical strategies for interactive read-alouds, narration, and parent-guided activities that support communication, comprehension, and a lifelong love of reading.
