Star Gospel Mission

Star Gospel Mission Founded in 1904 by Obadiah Dugan, Star Gospel Mission predates any Christian welfare organization in the Holy City.

Originally established in the old Star Vaudeville Theater that had been closed by the city fathers because of the undesirable element associated with it; The Star Gospel Mission gleans its name from the historic theater and firmly entrenches itself within the identity of the city of Charleston. With the continued generosity of the Charleston community, Star Gospel Mission keeps its doors open to a

ll persons in crisis and need; providing food, clothing, shelter and spiritual guidance. We are keeping faith with the founding vision by providing help to the needy and sharing the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with all those who come through its doors.

A night of music, culture, and community under the Charleston sky. 🎶✨

A heartfelt thank you to Spoleto Festival USA and their Open Stage Door program for providing tickets for our guests to experience an unforgettable evening with Pedrito Martinez at Cistern Yard.

Access to the arts creates moments of joy, connection, and belonging. We are grateful for partners who help make those experiences possible. ❤️

Exciting progress is taking shape at Star Gospel Mission!

With framing nearing completion on the first residence, what once lived on paper is now becoming a visible reality. In the weeks ahead, work will continue on the exterior as we move closer to completing the interior spaces that will one day hold healing, growth, and new beginnings. A huge shoutout to our Construction Task Force for keeping the plans moving!

Every step forward is a reminder that hope is being built here—brick by brick, story by story.

Summer can be a difficult season for many of our neighbors. Rising costs, food insecurity, housing instability, and the challenges of recovery do not take a vacation.

At Star Gospel Mission, we walk alongside men, women, and children every day with meals, shelter, recovery support, discipleship, case management, and community.

That's why we're launching the Summer of 40.

Our goal is to welcome 100 new monthly donors giving $40 a month. Together, those gifts provide the steady support that helps people move from crisis toward stability, healing, and hope.

A small monthly gift can become a warm meal, a safe place to sleep, a recovery milestone, or a fresh start.

Give $40. Change a story.

Summer essentials: sunshine, sunscreen… and hope.

This summer, we’re looking for 100 new donors to give $40 a month and help provide something that never goes out of season: hope.

Your monthly gift helps provide meals, shelter, recovery support, transportation, and the encouragement people need as they work toward lasting stability.

Because just like the essentials we reach for every summer, hope is essential too.

Will you be one of the 100?

100 donors. $40 a month. Endless impact. Read more at https://www.stargospelmission.org/blog/the-summer-of-40-give-40-change-a-story

A Walk In Their Shoes 2026 reminded us that compassion moves. Through every step, conversation, prayer, and act of support, our community came together to walk in love and stand alongside neighbors experiencing homelessness and hardship.

Watch the highlight recap from this unforgettable Pentecost weekend.
