NAACP to #47: You Not Invited to Our Convention

From NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson:

For 116 years, the NAACP has invited the sitting president of the United States to address the NAACP National Convention — regardless of their political party.

This year, the NAACP has decided to break with tradition and not invite President Donald Trump or Vice President J.D. Vance. This administration does not respect the Constitution or the rule of law, and we will not give a platform to fascism.

There is a rich history of both Republicans and Democrats attending our convention — from Harry Truman to Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and beyond. We're nonpartisan and have always welcomed those who believe in democracy and the Constitution.

But right now, it's clear — Donald Trump is attacking American democracy and civil rights. He believes more in the fascist playbook than in the U.S. Constitution. This playbook is radical and un-American.

This president has signed unconstitutional executive orders to oppress voters and undo federally mandated civil rights protections; he has illegally turned the military on our citizens and communities, while continually undermining every pillar of our democracy to make himself more powerful and to personally benefit from the U.S. government.

The NAACP Convention has always been a place where people across the country come together to map out our advocacy and mobilization strategies to advance civil rights and democracy for all.

Our annual convention is meant to be a safe space for all people — regardless of political ideology — who believe in multiracial democracy and the ideal of building a more perfect union.

A speech from State Rep. Jermaine Johnson, D-Richland, garnered national attention and more than 1 million views on YouTube.

Johnson was opposing an extreme anti-DEI provision in the state budget that was eventually removed on technical legislative grounds. That’s not the heart of what Johnson was fighting, though, writes Columnist Issac J. Bailey.

He was fighting something deeper. He was expressing his frustration with what Bailey calls the state’s bless-your-heart bigotry. It’s deployed by some white South Carolinians who are adamant about rolling back racial and civil rights progress but don’t want anyone to notice them doing so. They hide behind the disarming catchphrase “Bless your heart” to advance their dirty deeds.

“Every single time we give you an opportunity to show us something different, you show us who you are,” Johnson said. Read Bailey’s column: bit.ly/4c3RNEQ
