"So are we going to be on the news?" ๐Ÿ˜‚ Montrose, we wish.

This couple was full of stories and insights. We could've kept the cameras rolling all day. But for now, here's Montrose and Jorge with their hot takes on effective charity, yes/no style.

More of their stories coming soon!

You want to help and you know about 211. So you pass along the number and hope for the best. 211 IS one of the most comprehensive resource lists in the Lowcountry but have you ever tried to navigate that list yourself?

Navigating it means making multiple calls, explaining your situation to strangers, and knowing which questions to ask. Thatโ€™s a skillset, and for someone in crisis, figuring it out alone can feel impossible. While the resource exists, the gap is in the navigation.

Before you send the link, ask yourself if you can make that call together. That type of help could change everything for them because the referral isnโ€™t the help, the relationship is.

๐Ÿ’Œ Share this with someone who helps, they need to hear it too.

Hard launch.. meet our newest staff member, Nora! As our Mission Advancement Associate, Nora supports the organization through participant and donor communication, events management, and general administrative support, often serving as the first point of contact and helping ensure every interaction feels clear, warm, and professional.

A neighbor called us feeling unseen and misunderstood and it reminded us that we could all use more time talking to the people we serve.

So Kristin sat down and wrote a letter. Not about our unhoused neighbors in Charleston but to them.

Watch the full conversation on Shared Seat and read the letter on the blog.

A lot of nonprofit leaders in Charleston are doing incredible work and still feel like they're figuring it out alone.

The Nonprofit Learning Lab was built for that. Two full days of in-person training to help you strengthen your foundation, clarify your impact, and lead with more confidence. We cover everything from mission clarity and program design to legal basics and long-term organizational health, all in a room full of people who get it.

Pay-what-you-can. Scholarship-funded access available. Lunch and materials included.
Space is limited and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Apply at:

You've got a trunk full of leftover food and good intentions. So you head under the bridge. People eat. It feels right. But what happens the next day?

We've seen this as one of the most common, and most well-meaning, ways people try to help in Charleston. And the heart behind it is good.

Before you go consider asking one question: what do these people actually need from me?
Sometimes the most powerful thing you can bring isn't food. It's your time. Your curiosity. Your willingness to sit down and learn someone's story.

Presence before provision. That's where lasting change starts.

๐Ÿ‘‡ Have you been in this situation? Did you take the food? (P.S. We have too). Tell us your story in the comments. This is a conversation worth having.

๐Ÿ’ก Do Good Better Tip

The people we serve are not problems to be managed, they are neighbors to be known.

When we see people as projects, we often focus on fixing immediate needs. But when we see people as neighbors, we take the time to build relationships, understand their stories, and walk alongside them as they move toward thriving.

Real impact starts with genuine care. Not just for what someone needs, but for who they are.

Know names. Listen to stories. Build relationships.

Follow along for more ways to do good, better.
