Distressed dolphin/whale?

Call 800.922.5431 Founded in 2017, the mission of LMMN is to protect local marine mammals for future generations through science, awareness and conservation. We do this through educational outreach, dolphin monitoring and stranding response. We are a designated stranding network for South Carolina under Coastal Carolina University and in partnership with the NOAA Charleston.

Living in an Anthropogenic World: Adaptation and Resilience in a Tailless Dolphin
Koa is a wild dolphin surviving without tail flukes; an extraordinary physical disability with only five other documented cases worldwide. Drawing on nearly two years of field monitoring and community science data, this talk explores key insights into Koa’s behavioral adaptations, pod dynamics, and resilience while navigating heavily trafficked coastal waters. DCP is grateful to have Lauren Rust, founder and director of Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network, leading this presentation. Lauren has been working with marine mammals worldwide for almost 25 years and is currently the South Carolina state coordinator for all marine mammal strandings including dolphins and whales. This work involves responding to the 50-60 marine mammals that strand each year.

What an incredible finish to our Support Koa and Friends campaign!

Thanks to our amazing community, we surpassed our $5,000 fundraising goal AND unlocked the full $5,000 matching gift generously provided by Don and Mary Balderson!

That's more than $10,000 raised for marine mammal conservation! 🎉

What started with Koa's remarkable story became something even bigger: a community coming together to protect the dolphins and other marine mammals that share our coastal waters.

To Don and Mary, everyone who donated, shared Koa's story, cheered us on, or helped spread the word, THANK YOU!

The campaign may be over, but our work continues. And thanks to you, we're heading into it with an incredible boost of support!

From all of us at LMMN, thank you for being part of Koa's story and ours. 💙

What can your gift make possible for Koa and Friends? 🐬💙

Every time our research team heads onto the water, it takes resources to make those surveys possible, from boat fuel and field supplies to the specialized equipment used to photograph, identify, and monitor wild dolphins.

And until Monday, your generosity can go twice as far!

🐬 $50 becomes $100 to help provide research equipment and field supplies.

🐬 $100 becomes $200 to help fuel boat-based population monitoring and photo-ID surveys.

🐬 $250 becomes $500 to support public education and boater outreach.

Thanks to longtime LMMN supporters Don and Mary Balderson, gifts to our Support Koa and Friends campaign are being matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $5,000.

Just 2 days remain to help us unlock the full match! Our matching campaign ends Monday, October 12.

What does it mean when we say we're “monitoring” Koa? 🐬

Every time our research team encounters Koa in the wild, we have an opportunity to collect valuable scientific data.

Through behavioral observations, photo-identification, and systematic data collection, we document Koa's movements, feeding behaviors, and interactions with other dolphins.

Each encounter adds to our growing dataset, allowing us to track changes and better understand Koa's behavior over time.

Since first documenting Koa in March 2025, this ongoing monitoring has provided valuable insight into how this remarkable dolphin is navigating life in the wild without a fluke.

And Koa is just one of the many wild dolphins our team studies to better understand and protect.

That research takes time on the water, boat fuel, photo-ID equipment, field supplies, and support from people like you.

Only 4 days remain to double your impact!

Through October 12, gifts to our Support Koa and Friends campaign are being matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $5,000.
