Last Thursday, AIA Charleston members got a behind-the-scenes look at the Gibbes Museum of Art’s latest expansion during a hard hat tour.

The project brings new life to the museum’s neighboring historic building, constructed in 1878 and originally designed by Charleston architect E.B. White. Once complete, the addition will provide approximately 6,000 square feet of new classroom, lecture, and exhibition space.

One of the project’s defining features is a second-floor architectural bridge connecting the historic structure to the existing Gibbes Museum, creating a thoughtful link between old and new.

Join us for a hard hat tour of the Gibbes Art Museum Addition!

Opening in spring 2027, the Gibbes Museum of Art’s expansion will mark an exciting new chapter for one of Charleston’s most important cultural institutions. The project centers on the historic E.B. White Building at 141 Meeting Street, a two-story, 6,000-square-foot structure acquired by the Gibbes and the City of Charleston in 2025. Built in 1878 in the Palladian style, the historic building will be thoughtfully transformed to complement the Gibbes’ landmark Beaux-Arts home next door.

We will meet at the site entrance at 5:00pm; please arrive early to park and walk over. Closed-toe shoes, hard hats, and safety vests are required for all attendees; please bring your own as limited PPE will be available on site.

This event is open to AIA Members only and HSW Credit will be logged for all attendees.

Join us for an engaging lunch & learn session on how contractors go about preconstruction & cost estimating for projects in the Holy City!
 
Join AIA Charleston at the Clemson Design Center for a candid look inside the estimating process: what actually goes into a conceptual budget, how a GC gets from a napkin sketch to a GMP, and why two projects that look nearly identical on paper can carry wildly different price tags.

We’ll pull back the curtain on how contractors use historical unit costs, detailed takeoffs, and subcontractor input to price your work. More importantly, we’ll detail what you can include in your concept packages to get a sharper, more reliable number back from the GC.

To close, we will look at current Charleston-market cost trends and what projects are actually costing in our city, straight from the precon leaders at Choate Construction, Trident Construction & Spire Contracting.

So, whether you’re setting expectations at the first owner meeting or defending a budget at the end of DD, you’ll leave with practical tools to give your clients cost guidance they can trust.
