The Palmetto Artisans Program met with community members, Mayor Touchberry, DCSO, SPD, and members of the Dignity Project in the first of a series of community forums regarding the implementation of an entrepreneurial program for youth selling Palmetto roses in Summerville.

Under this model, already implemented in Charleston and North Charleston, youth will work with adult mentors to be trained and supervised in all aspects of the rose-selling business, including finance, social and business ettiquette, customer service, and even first aid.

Stay tuned to social media for more information on upcoming meetings.

Dignity Project to Gather Community Input Concerning Recent Police Incidents

· The Summerville Dignity Project is requesting input from the community concerning recent Summerville police incidents. Community members may offer their input through an email to: [email protected] (they may also request that their input be anonymous by indicating that in the email).

· The diverse team of Dignity Project members will gather to organize the input into topics which will be discussed from multiple, diverse community and police perspectives. The members will also listen for understanding through participating in a series of perspective swaps, where they are tasked with understanding the input topics through perspectives that are not their own. For example, community members will try to deeply understand and offer feedback from a police perspective, and police will try to deeply understand and offer feedback from a community perspective.

· The project, which includes community members and Summerville police officers, will then seek to hold mutually-respectful, honest conversations, followed by positive collaborations, for shared progress that offers dignity to all involved. The project will hold future community forums to update the community on the collaborative progress.
