In 2019, Mary Whyte’s groundbreaking traveling exhibition of 50 watercolors called We the People: Portraits of Veterans in America opened to the public in Charleston, South Carolina. In the first six weeks alone over 22,000 people viewed the collection. Now, that exhibition is currently on view at the . The response, especially from veterans, confirmed Whyte’s belief in art’s extraordinary power to communicate and connect. Then and now, what began as fifty portraits has turned into a national mission giving veterans a means of finding whole health through art and self-expression.

All veterans with ID are eligible for our online classes covering the fundamentals of watercolor. Learn how to paint different subject matter while working at your own pace and in your own home. It’s FREE and it’s fun! At the end of the six week session you will have the option of engaging in small on line zoom groups to discuss and see what other veterans have been creating. .art is the platform to provide the on-line Watercolor Bootcamp classes and is partnered with PAF. Our next Watercolor Bootcamp is July 13th, and you can register for the class through the link in the above bio. The registration deadline is July 7th.

VETERAN Highlight: Mike Henry is a veteran and professional artist who serves as a facilitator with the Patriot Art Foundation. Through his role as an instructor, he combines his passion for art with his commitment to supporting fellow veterans. Mike has led up to five classes for veterans in VA hospitals and clinics as part of the Brushes with Valor program. Reflecting on his experience, one participating veteran shared, “You have taught me how an artist sees the world”. Mike Henry was interviewed by Sherrie Kleithch of the Yale Expositor for an article titled “Yale artist creates ethereal works inspired by light, experience”. In the article, Mike shares his unconventional path to art: he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served from 1979 to 1982, then built a 40-year career with UPS — using art to relieve stress along the way. The Patriot Art Foundation partnered with Serving Together for the Women’s Warriors Network. On April 16th. Our thanks to the American Red Cross for providing the space to gather for a fun evening. All the Veteran Women Warriors learned glazing with Sharon M. Boyle with her demonstration of cherry blossoms. Sharon has won many awards. We were joined by PAF Board Member Carrie Kawaga. Recently Brad G., a regular participant in the Patriot Art Foundation’s Watercolor programs, entered and was awarded first place in the Bangor Art Society’s Juried Exhibition. Congrats to Brad for being recognized for his talent and dedication to his art.
The Patriot Art Foundation provides free education and materials to veterans seeking to use art as a pathway to a healthier and more meaningful life. Via hands-on workshops and online classes, they give veterans a means of self expression, connection and purpose.
