To our 2026 seasonal team: thank you!! 💚

Field Instructors Anna and Owen, and Trail Crew Maddy, Sable, Myles, Ayden, and Gabby, you really hit the ground running this season (and laughing often).

You took on tough technical projects and led volunteers of every age and experience level. You made every project day feel welcoming, and you still made sure the work got done right. You led by example, every single day.

You showed what this community is all about: a love of these places, a commitment to giving back, and a whole lot of fun along the way. Trails across the valley are better because of you, and so is our crew.

Saying goodbye to a team like this is never easy. We’re so excited for whatever adventures come next for you, and we hope our paths cross again soon. You’ll always have a spot on the crew!! 🥾

Want first dibs on next season’s most popular projects? 🏔️

As an RFOV Member, you can sign up for projects before registration opens to the public. Our most popular volunteer days, like the Four Pass Loop, Maroon Bells, and beaver dam analog builds, fill up fast, so an early spot makes all the difference.

But membership is more than a head start. It’s how you can join the crew year-round. Members fund everything you don’t see on project day: the tool repairs, the safety gear, the work gloves, and the miles it takes to get there.

Every McLeod, Pulaski, and shovel in our cache moved a lot of dirt this season, and now it’s time to give them some love! 🛠️

Join us Thursday, Nov. 5, from 1–5 PM in the gear room (suite 32) at the Third Street Center in Carbondale to clean, sharpen, and tune up our tools so they’re ready for next year.

Big congratulations to Owen McArdle, one of our Field Instructors, on being named the new editor of Sol del Valle, the Valley's bilingual community newspaper.

We can't wait to see the stories he brings to its pages, and we're glad he'll be just down the hall once the season wraps up.

Some days stay with you long after the mud dries. Back in late August, our Saturday started early at the Babbish Gulch trailhead, where 40+ volunteers, partners, and staff piled into a caravan headed for Middle Thompson Creek. Along the way, USFS led us on a show-and-tell stop comparing a thriving beaver habitat to one still waiting for its comeback — the perfect preview for the work ahead.

Once on site, we unloaded 350 wooden stakes and got to work. The rain rolled in (we welcomed the moisture, even if the hail was a little much), but we pushed through, and once the skies cleared, the crew shifted into high gear. By the end of the day, we'd installed 44 Beaver Dam Analogs — double what we built over the last two seasons at Butler Creek — restoring nearly half a mile of streambank and over 13 acres of wetlands.

We wrapped it all up with pizza and drinks, celebrating a day of real climate action in our beautiful shared backyard. It's amazing what big hands and bigger hearts can do.

We’re excited to partner with Desert Mountain Medicine and Garfield County Outdoors to offer this Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Training. It will focus on prevention, assessment, and treatment of environmental illnesses, recognizing and stabilizing life threats caused by trauma, and calling for a rescue in the vent of a wilderness emergency. Proceeds from this training will go to providing WFA training to high school students across Garfield County School District.

Did you know RFOV volunteers have been helping restore Coal Basin Ranch for five years? We’re proud of the impact our amazing community of stewards has accomplished over the years. That’s why we’re so excited to be heading back to Coal Basin Ranch on Saturday, Sept 12th! Join us for a day restoring the former coal mining site, where we’ll be planting native plants, pulling invasive species, and completing erosion control projects.
