Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers

Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers Community-powered stewardship since 1995. Join us in caring for our public lands!

A most agreeable Saturday: strangers became a caravan, a caravan became a crew, and a crew β€” undeterred by heavy rain β€” built 44 small wooden monuments (Beaver Dam Analogs), each one a quiet proof of what neighbors can do together, and what climate action can look like when it's this well organized. Splendid company. Splendider beavers. 🦫πŸͺ΅

The Jess Weaver (No Name) Trail in Glenwood Canyon needs your help!

This Sunday, August 30th, we're heading back to Jess Weaver for the first time since 2021 β€” and we need serious trail warriors for this one. We're improving the high ridge connector between the Jess Weaver and Grizzly Creek trails.

Fair warning: this project is highly strenuous. Volunteers will hike 3 miles in to the bridge site, where we'll be filling rock gabions for a new bridge crossing the trail. It's tough work, but this trail deserves some extra love β€” and the views up there don't hurt either.

If you're up for the challenge, join us! This is a special one.

πŸ“’ July Volunteer of the Month: Ryan πŸ₯³

Huge shoutout to Ryan for crushing it last month! Ryan was part of our inaugural trail crew in 2022 and has volunteered with us since 2023. This season, he became a volunteer crew leader and has attended 5 projects already this season. He's avid for rock work and helps to formalize climbing access trails in his free time. He always shows up with a goofy/mischievous smile and always brings technical skills and positivity to every project he's on.

Thanks for being a Rockstar, Ryan!!

Grateful for partners like Zegna, who understand that real leadership means investing in the landscapes and communities you're part of. Thank you for backing conservation work across the valley!

As the Aspen area's forests face wildfires, bark beetles and more, one shop on S. Galena Street has been slowly fighting back against the impacts of climate change in order to preserve the landscape for future generations.

Another successful hut trip is in the books for our new 2026–2027 Youth in Nature Cohort! πŸ”οΈ This year we welcomed 14 students β€” our largest cohort yet β€” from across the valley and as far as Meeker.

Over four days, students unplugged, got to know each other, cooked meals together, and dove into hands-on stewardship: learning orienteering and summiting Mount Yeckel, building 17 burn piles with the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association, spending an hour alone in nature, and even spotting a moose along the way. They left with new friendships, new skills, and a deeper understanding of what it means to care for the places we love.

It's hard to believe this marks our fifth Youth in Nature cohort! Come celebrate with us β€” tomorrow, Thursday, August 6th, we're hosting a YIN Alumni BBQ at Sopris Park in Carbondale, 5–8pm. RSVP at the link in our bio, we'd love to see you there.

A huge thank you to The Buddy Program , Aspen Center for Environmental Studies , and 10th Mountain Division Hut Association for helping make this trip possible.

Thomas Lakes Trail, we crushed it! πŸ™Œ

Last weekend, volunteers pulled out worn-down steps and built puncheon steps in their place β€” sturdy work that'll hold up for years on this well-loved trail.

It took a little time to find our rhythm, but once we did, we flew through the work. First-timers, veterans, youngins and oldins β€” everyone brought their best, and we wrapped the day with pizza and cold drinks.

Big thanks to -Performance-Labs for donating a Performance Strategy Session + 12-Session Flex Pass for our raffle: congrats to winner Zuleika! πŸŽ‰

And a huge shoutout to Wilderness Workshop and Defiende Nuestra Tierra for partnering with us and providing Spanish translation β€” kicking off the first of three bilingual community projects this season. Next up: 8/29 Beaver Dam Analogue build at Middle Thompson Creek, and 9/19 Latino Conservation Week at Linwood/Doc Holliday Cemetery.

Next time you're hiking Thomas Lakes and step on those new puncheons, give us a little nod β€” and better yet, come join us next time! It really is a good time.

Thank you to everyone who showed up for this place we all love!

Two spots just opened up for something special: our Four Pass Loop Overnight Backpacking project, August 13–16!

Join RFOV volunteers, staff, and our professional trail crew for four days and three nights caring for one of Colorado's most iconic trail systems. We'll access the Loop via the East Fork Trailhead near Gothic and Crested Butte, working the stretch between West Maroon Pass and Frigid Air Pass β€” stunning terrain that deserves stewardship as beautiful as the views.

This is a rare chance to give back to a trail so many of us love, while camping under some of the best scenery in Colorado. Spots are limited β€” grab yours at rfov.org/calendar or click the link in our bio.
