🙌 Making science tangible: Faculty Matt Bowers brings the Roaring Fork Valley into the classroom

🔎 For Dr. Matt Bowers, science starts with curiosity and becomes meaningful when students connect classroom questions to the world around them.

This year, drought conditions in the Roaring Fork Valley have made those lessons especially real. With historically low snowpack levels, CRMS students are watching conversations about water rights, streamflow, and irrigation unfold in real time—right outside their doors.

For many students, the drought isn’t theoretical. It’s visible in the rivers they kayak, fish, and pass every day.

🇺🇸 Bill Sandersen '64 made the ultimate sacrifice

Bill Sandersen '64, gifted athlete and artist, was killed in action in Vietnam on August 18, 1968, after enlisting and being deployed despite his doubts about U.S. involvement.

The adventurous CRMS graduate, who had earlier survived serious accidents while skiing, made the ultimate sacrifice at just 22 years old.

Bill remains the only known Colorado Rocky Mountain School alumni killed in active military service. He was buried in Aspen with full military honors and received both the Purple Heart and Silver Star for bravery.

As his sister Carol Hughes '62 poignantly reflects, "I miss my brother every day. I can't help but wonder what he would have accomplished had he lived."

⭐️ CRMS alumnus Mikey Schumacher ’14 says attending CRMS was “one of the best decisions” he ever made.

Arriving during a difficult period in his life, Mikey found the support, structure, and mentorship that helped him believe in his future and reach goals he once thought were out of reach. Mikey reflects on the profound impact of his Wilderness solo and credits faculty member Betsy Bingham-Johns as “the first person who truly believed in me.” Betsy encouraged him through the college application process and helped him see his accomplishments in a new light.

🐻 After earning degrees from CU Boulder and USC, he launched his company, but cute, creating plushies with purpose- products and stories that help people feel seen, understood, and less alone.

Mikey says the lessons he learned at CRMS—embracing imperfections, tuning out outside noise, and believing in himself—continue to shape both his work and his mission to help others feel seen and understood.

CRMS students lead community English in Action sessions, designing and delivering lessons for adult community members to help them build their English skills. Spanish faculty member Virginia Vermezi, who oversees the program, puts it best: "The relationships that develop between our students and the English learners are at the heart of the program, turning each session into a shared experience of growth, confidence, and community."
