In our recent Fishermen Wellness newsletter, we talked about the importance of a fisherman’s hands.

The hands can tell you a lot about a a person, and they can tell you about how your body is holding up, too.

A fishermen’s hands are calloused, paint-splattered, covered in grease or bait, wrapped in electrical tape, protected in gloves, gripping ropes, pulling traps, squeezing banders, shucking scallops.

They are one of the most important tools a fisherman has.

Which is why grip strength matters more than people might realize — not just how hard you can squeeze, but how long you can hold on when you start to get tired.

Read more about grip strength on our blog at the link in our bio.

Together, we persevere. 💪

Just for the Halibut was an absolutely perfect evening! Over 150 people joined us at Primo Restaurant in Rockland to celebrate the world's largest flounder. With many small plates, lots to learn, and great company, we certainly had a fun time.

Thanks to our sponsor Skowhegan Savings Bank, our hosts at Primo, our friend Nate Garrett of Big Fish Gyotaku, and to everyone who came out to share the love of seafood.

Last month, MCFA hosted a Celebrity Chef Day at Brunswick Junior High School. Special thanks to Noly Lopez of Gather for volunteering to whip up several hundred portions of delicious monkfish a la plancha!

As you can see from the feedback board, kids overwhelmingly responded "Loved it" or "Liked it" - a great sign of future seafood consumers. Read more on our blog: https://www.mainecoastfishermen.org/post/brunswick-celebrity-chef-day

If you want to taste it yourself, here's the recipe (scaled down for a home chef!): https://www.mainecoastfishermen.org/post/dish-the-fish-monkfish-a-la-plancha

"You're helping boats go fishing that are catching fish cleanly in a well-managed way. It's a high-quality fish. You're allowing the processors onshore to get some business, and then you're providing really high-quality fish - probably the healthiest protein out there - to the food insecure and schoolchildren." - MCFA’s Mary Hudson

Great story from NPR on our Fishermen Feeding Mainers program and the amazing impact we are having on fishermen, working waterfronts, and our community.

Big shout out to Gulf of Maine Research Institute on their work helping schools incorporate education around fisheries and seafood into the lunch program. So great to be partnered with you on this effort!

Right now we're in the middle of a fundraising campaign to keep Fishermen Feeding Mainers going. Any gift is matched up to $500,000.

Surging food costs and fuel prices are pummeling Maine's struggling groundfishing industry. But a pandemic-era program is helping to keep it afloat as inflation worsens.
