Over the last year, we worked with the Maine Coastal Program to develop a methodology for documenting the critical infrastructure that supports commercial fishing and aquaculture along Maine’s coast.

The resulting report, Charting the Working Waterfront: A Matrix for Understanding Commercial Fishing and Aquaculture Access, establishes a foundation for understanding what infrastructure exists, how it is used, and why different sites matter to the people who depend on them.

We're wrapping up the last week of National Seafood Month with our Northern Maine Seafood Hero: Melanie Lagasse.

Melanie goes the extra mile (quite literally) to bring fresh local seafood to her students in Aroostook County, often driving the 660-mile, 11-hour round trip from Fort Kent to the Portland Fish Exchange and back again to pick up local fish for her schools' cafeterias.

The Trump Administration recently announced $8 billion in funding through the USDA’s Harvest Fuel Relief Program. Designed to offset soaring diesel and input costs during the 2026 production year, the program provides one-time financial assistance based on estimated losses.

However, because the USDA and its newly-formed Office of Seafood is still establishing how to work with non-Title I commodities like wild-harvested seafood, it isn't yet clear how eligibility or payment rates will be determined for the fishing industry. This is our opportunity to shape that process so it works for Maine’s local fleet.

She loves to run and appreciates the value of exercise and time outdoors to her own sense of wellness and is grateful for the opportunity to fundraise for MCFA’s Fishermen Wellness program, which provides physical and mental health resources and support to the fishing community. And, she is honored to have her daughter, Phoebe, running on team Racing Redfish!

Hi all, I’m Allie! I work for MaineHealth’s Community Health Department, supporting the Healthy Eating, Active Living, and Mental Health Awareness Training grants. Through this role, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with the Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association and blend some of my personal passions with my professional work.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time outdoors with my fiancé, Cody, and our two-year-old daughter, Hazel. Running is one of my favorite hobbies to stay active, and I’m honored to help raise funds for MCFA’s Fishermen Wellness Program.
