We are thrilled to name the artists selected for our upcoming collaborative exhibition with Alan Lomax Archive at the Association for Cultural Equity :

Artists in Dialogue with Sounds of Haiti from the Alan Lomax Archive

Featuring the work of:
Laïssa Alexis • Love Aritus • Marie Casimir • Megan Delianne • Stephanie "Philomen" Dorceant • Jennica Drice • Sydney Rose Maubert • Christopher Mitchell • Marie Guilloto Stuppard • Zarita Zevallos

This interactive exhibition will feature curated pairings of audio from renowned ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax’s recordings from Haiti in 1936-1937 and work created and chosen by the artists

Today marks the historic moment our ancestors chose freedom and solidarity at Bwa Kayiman.

We are proud to carry forward new and intergenerational ways of demanding and understanding freedom for our Haitian community here in New York City and online: from artists and organizers leading a teach-in studying the global impact of the Haitian Revolution to kids learning about Haiti’s national bird, the near-threatened Hispaniolan Trogon through story, song and print-making during Ti Atis Second Saturdays.

Collaborators in our community, like Kinfolk Tech and Brooklyn Children’s Museum, partner with us to make these teaching moments happen.

Join our movement! We’re always looking for Volunteers and Interns to help us run gatherings like these from the inside. Haiti Cultural Exchange (HCX) is excited to announce our forthcoming exhibition in collaboration with the Alan Lomax Archive at the Association for Cultural Equity. Archive of Alan Lomax (1915-2002) was a pioneering ethnomusicologist for over six decades. From 1936-1937, at the urging of heralded African American anthropologist and author Zora Neale Hurston, Lomax traveled to Haiti to record the nation’s music and rituals on behalf of the US Library of Congress.

The exhibition will feature curated pairings of recordings and artwork, connecting their modes of communion and communication over time and place.
