Hello, NBCB community! Tonight we had an Intro to Navigation class for kayaks and canoes taught by Matt D We first learned about charts vs maps. Maps represent land, geographic locations, routes, and terrain. Charts are particularly valuable for gaining local knowledge when visiting new waterways for the first time and identify water depths, lighthouses, land elevations and more.
After learning the basics of how to read a chart, the class planned a trip using sample charts in areas across the US using a plotter and a divider. Then the class learned how to use a compass to fix a location. Lastly, Matt D discussed modern GPS devices. A full class!
See you on the water!
