Safety net hospitals are known for serving high rates of Medicaid, Medicare, and uninsured patients. Their patient populations are frequently lower-income and face higher chronic disease rates, making them some of the most vulnerable amongst us. Because safety net hospitals treat these patients when other hospitals won’t, they often struggle with finances and are often at risk of closure.

25 acute care safety net hospitals in the nation scored straight “A”’s across equity, value, and outcomes, earning them spots on the Lown Index Honor Roll.

PRESS RELEASE: More heart specialists, more low-value stents: New study links interventional cardiologist supply to overuse of non-emergency heart procedures.

In parts of the country with the greatest concentration of physicians who perform coronary stenting and angioplasty, patients are more likely to receive those procedures for stable heart disease, a use that major clinical trials have shown offers little or no benefit over medication alone, according to a new study from researchers at the Lown Institute published in PLOS ONE.

The Lown Institute, a nonpartisan think tank setting the standard for social responsibility in healthcare, announces the election of Selwyn O. Rogers, Jr. as chairperson of its board of directors. Dr. Rogers, a board member since 2023, assumes leadership as the Lown Institute expands its impact as a trusted leader in advancing a U.S. healthcare system that is affordable, effective, and just. He replaces Patrcia Gabow, MD, MACP, who served as chairperson for the past five years.
