Youthscapers is a little different this summer, but we are still available for work!

We are running a program this year, but it's a little different from how things have been done in the past. The program is called Youthscape Mobile.

What is Youthscapers Mobile?

As you may know, the BTC building is currently closed, and our programming is now virtual. This means that we do not have a formal Youthscapers program as we have the last four years. Instead, teens have signed up to be on our roster of Youthscapers, and we will do our best to match them with customers. They are NOT formally trained by us, but have expressed an enthusiasm in doing yard work this summer. Experience levels will vary. If you are interested in hiring a teen or would like more information, please email [email protected]!

It is with heavy heart I announce my resignation from Co-Director of Youthscapers. This has been a difficult decision to make, but stepping down will allow me to spend more time with my wife and daughter after school (I'm a BHS teacher) and in the summer, and at this point I feel confident that the program will continue to thrive after I leave. It has been a wild ride at Youthscapers since we started five years ago carting around muddy teens and equipment in my station wagon and Baker's sedan. I have had the privilege of working with over 80 butt-kicking teens, 6 rockstar adult supervisors, and each summer I have been amazed at how professional, determined, and just all around AWESOME each crew has been. A huge thank you to Paul Epstein, Matt Cooney, my work-wife Matt Baker, Kate Kennedy and all of my BTC family for making Youthscapers happen and putting up with my dad jokes year after year. And thank you to all of our customers, many who feel like my own friends and neighbors, for all of your support (and sometimes, patience!). And of course, thank you TEENS. I enjoyed working with each and every single one of you and am in awe of your commitment, your kindness and respect toward each other, your receptiveness to feedback, and willingness to grow and learn new skills. It has truly been an honor serving this program and this town, and I look forward to seeing Youthscapers continue to grow in the future.

Sincerely,
Brendan

The Youthscapers Story

Youthscapers began with a mission: get teens working. Paul Epstein, Brookline High School social worker and founder of the Brookline Teen Center, knew how important it was for young people to make money and feel accomplished after a long day of work. In the summer of 2012, Paul launched Youthscapers as a way of connecting teens to yard work and odd jobs in the Brookline community. On an informal basis, Paul received some requests from neighbors, friends, and colleagues for weeding, raking, moving furniture, and other small jobs to get some cash in teens’ pockets.

By Fall of 2015, Paul’s goal was to expand Youthscapers so more teens with little to no job experience could learn work skills, dependability, and customer service skills. Paul met with Brookline High School teachers Brendan McCarthy and Matt Baker to discuss how to grow Youthscapers into a legitimate business. Brendan and Matt then collaborated with the Brookline Teen Center to fund the cost of equipment, marketing, uniforms, and to provide a home base for the company. In Spring 2016, Matt and Brendan posted flyers all over town, reached out to local publications, and hired eight teens who were hungry for their first job. Youthscapers became a formidable business in June 2016, complete with an orientation, training, payroll, and a 40 hour a week schedule. Our pilot summer was a complete success with over 30 clients, 8 teen staff, and hundreds of hours of work.

To this date, we have over 150 customers and counting, and have hired over 40 Youthscapers. Every summer we have a whole new team of teens (save for two or three returnees) who embark on their first job experience. For the summer of 2019, we are looking to hire 25 new Youthscapers and reach even more customers. Among a plethora of soft skills, they learn dependability, how to communicate with supervisors and coworkers, and how to work as a team. For many of these kids, learning differences, anxiety, and other challenges have stifled their ability to obtain a job or try new experiences. When we show up to a job, and a customer comes outside with a smile and introduces themselves to our team, it eases anxiety and instills a sense of community that is often lost in today's world. We look forward to providing quality work to your homes and businesses this summer.
