The mission of The Child & Family Guidance Center is to provide culturally responsive mental health services and complementary supports to children, teenagers, and their families, regardless of their ability to pay. Our goal is for all Fairfield County children to be emotionally and psychologically healthy so that they can reach their maximum potential at home, at school and in life.

On Wednesday, October 21, more than 40 CFGC staff members participated in Adult Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training led by Melissa Perez-Constantine, LMSW and Kevin Iglesias, MPH. AtThe Hub CTT, Melissa and Kevin support and coordinate mental and behavioral health initiatives through local and regional workgroups, including Adult MHFA.

Administered by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, Adult MHFA teaches participants how to recognize signs of mental health and substance use challenges in individuals aged 18 and older, provide initial support, and connect individuals with appropriate care when needed. The training covers topics such as anxiety, depression, psychosis, and substance use.

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we’re proud to celebrate the commitment of our staff and programs to ensuring that children and families can access mental health services in the language that is most comfortable for them.

Last month, the Child Health and Development Institute (CHDI) recognized Xiomara Lopez, LMSW, with an award for serving the most individual TF-CBT cases in a language other than English. CHDI also recognized our Outpatient Child Clinic (OPCC) for serving the overall most TF-CBT cases in a language other than English!

Strong relationships are at the heart of healthy families and thriving communities. We’re proud to see CFGC President & CEO Giselle Acevedo, M.Ed. J.D., L.M.F.T., featured in Fairfield University’s Dean’s Dialogue with Bilias-Lolis, PhD on the power of relationships, connection, and repair.

Giselle shared insights on how the relationships we build, both personally and professionally, shape how we navigate challenges, strengthen connections, and create a greater sense of belonging.

Hyacintha Bernard, Director of Reunification, Therapeutic Family Therapy, and the Visitation Center, along with Noel Bernard, Development Associate, recently participated in United Way of Coastal and Western Connecticut’s 2026 Impact Breakfast for CFGC.

The event’s theme, "The Power of Us: Building Resilient, Connected Communities," fostered valuable discussions about fostering meaningful relationships, a sense of belonging, and the potential outcomes when organizations like The Child & Family Guidance Center collaborate with community members.

Hyacintha and Noel also had the opportunity to engage with community leaders such as State Rep Lucy Dathan and Andrea Torres Fodor, Vice President and Regional Business Banking Manager at Newtown Savings Bank and President of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Bridgeport.

Many thanks to United Way for hosting this event and for sharing our mission to help our community, children, and families thrive.

Avangrid hosted a Community Connections: Board and Volunteer Recruitment Fair for area non-profits to connect with Avangrid employees and recruit volunteers and potential board members.
