Art has a way of giving voice to what words cannot.
This past Wednesday, our IS3 and IS4 students visited the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum for a guided tour and hands-on studio experience that became much more than an art project.
Creating masks with colorful tissue paper, students explored their emotions, experiences, and hopes for the future. As they shared the meaning behind their creations, some spoke about the happy faces they put on for their children while quietly navigating sadness and struggle. Others reflected on their immigrant journeys, expressing fears, sacrifices, hopes, and dreams through color and symbolism.
One student’s mask told a particularly moving story: dark green represented what she left behind in her home country, light green symbolized hope in this country, and flowers blooming across the crown represented knowledge blossoming.
These are the moments that remind us why our mission at Mercy Learning Center goes beyond education. When women are given the space to express themselves, share their stories, and feel seen and heard, learning becomes a pathway to healing, connection, and growth.
