Swim Across the Sound A movement dedicated to supporting cancer patients and their families throughout Connecticut’s Fairfield region. St.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of dollars are raised to cover living expenses and fund education, screenings and other no-cost programs. Vincent's Medical Center Philanthropy Department is the charitable arm of Hartford Healthcare/St. Vincent's Medical Center located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Vincent’s is dedicated to providing healthy living at every stage of life and enhance life by addressing the unique needs of patients, families and our community. Healthcare education, wellness and disease prevention education is offered through a wealth of resources such as symposiums, classes and support groups. Our outreach programs and partnerships are designed to enhance public health and quality of life in the greater Bridgeport area and improve access to health services for members of the community we serve. We seek to advance medical or healthcare knowledge through education and relieve or enhance any ongoing public healthcare efforts. Our programs reach adults and teenagers, men and women, infants and seniors, providing health education and care regardless of ability to pay.

At just eleven years old, I was diagnosed with an aggressive, leukemia—a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. My baseball season was put on hold, my summer was canceled, and my life was placed in immediate suspense. For the next six months, my reality was confined to a hospital isolation room under the heavy shadow of a grim 20% survival rate.

Surgical Oncologist Swims for her Patients
I was motivated to join the swim because of one particular patient. A young man with very aggressive and advanced cancer. Unfortunately, we knew that he would not make it. He was living abroad thousands of miles from his family. His mother fought long and hard to get a Visa. She finally got the Visa and then quickly realized she could not afford to buy a plane ticket. We immediately called the Swim, and they got her a plane ticket. She made it in time to see her son. That is why I put my name on the list.
There is something deeply moving and inspiring to swim alongside so many people committed to this cause and satisfying to watch my own patients benefit from these efforts. Dr. Jill Rubinstein
