The Rotary Club of Bridgeport has supported nOURish BRIDGEPORT for many years - now it is our turn to support their important community effort in a blood drive they are sponsoring.

Last month, the American Red Cross declared an emergency blood shortage for only the second time in its history.

This will be held in the gymnasium of the Cardinal Shehan Center on Saturday, November 14th, from 8 a.m.- 2 p.m.

1494 Main Street, Bridgeport.

We are so proud to introduce Recipes From Our Community! A new cookbook created by the students of our Adult English Education Program.

Each student provided a recipe from their home country. Not only is this an opportunity to provide meal ideas that are as delicious as they are diverse, but it also honors the heritage and traditions of our adult learners.

We wanted to share this recipe for Shrimp Ceviche first, as it is the perfect dish to make before our warm sunny days fade to autumn.

Shrimpa Ceviche

Recipe by D. Brito (Ecuador)

Teachers: L. Schuster, J. Parnell & Z. Chowdury

Yield : 4 people

Ingredients:

1 Pound of shrimp

4 Chopped tomatoes

1 Red onion sliced thinly

1 Cup of lemon juice

1 Cup of orange juice

2 tablespoons of chopped cilantro

Salt and pepper to taste

Plantain chips or popcorn for serving



Directions for cooking:

-Wash the shrimp well

-Cook the shrimp in water with a little salt for 3-5 minutes

-Remove and let them cool

-Mix the tomatoes, onion and cilantro in a bowl

-Add the shrimp and mix everything together

-Add the lemon juice and orange juice

-Add the salt, pepper to taste

-Refrigerate for 20 minutes

-Serve cold with plantain chips or popcorn

~Shrimp ceviche served cold

Morgan Cleveland started out as a regular and dedicated volunteer at nOURish BRIDGEPORT, and eventually became one of our newest Board Members.

Anybody who has been fortunate enough to know Morgan knows that, when she delivers a quote as poignant as the one above, she means every word.

Volunteerism is walking beside someone and not ahead of them.

It is understanding that dignity is choice—that a person should be allowed to choose what they bring home, what they cook, and how they will nOURish their loved ones.

The choice is theirs, but having a volunteer by their side is the quiet and gentle reminder that they are not alone. 💚

A huge thank you to our friends at NEOS Investments in Westport for donating OVER 50 BACKPACKS filled with school supplies for the families of our Adult English Education learners!

There were many fun color options, and our adult students were so grateful to have new backpacks and school supplies for their young children.

We have absolutely loved being a part of the ParadiseGreenMarket this season. Tent-to-tent with so many amazing community partners every other Monday is just another reminder of what the work we do is all about.

We will be there next on Monday, 8/31—be sure to stop by to say hi to Dan, and perhaps purchase some merch or fresh, hydronic produce!

Today's the day! 🎒

And yesterday was assembly day for the Great Back-to-School Giveaway, sponsored by Mutual Security Credit Union!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated and helped make this giveaway possible. Your generosity is helping local children head back to school feeling prepared, confident, and supported. We are so grateful for our amazing community partners and all the folks who continue to show up for our neighbors. 💚

A very big thank you to MSCU for your generous check, as well as for helping to pack 300 BAGS with back-to-school supplies for kids.

During pantry later today, folks from MSCU will personally be handing the bags out to our neighbors and their families.💪
