A-Shift made a good stop on a well involved structure fire on Sunday afternoon. This fire also started a wildland fire, making it extremely complex. Great job A-Shift!

Great job C shift!

Our brush truck and task force leader that had been assigned to the Aspen Acres fire earlier this week, returned back to Boulder today. Almost immediately, another engine was staffed and headed back south to help out on the same fire. This time, a type 1 engine (pictured) was specifically requested due to the needs for structure protection in populated areas that are immediately threatened. Another task force leader is also assisting again.

These assignments are not the same as the 14 day assignment our other crew is on in California. These are through a mutual aid agreement through the state (CMAS), which means the crew is only gone for about 72 hours. It is essentially short-term assistance during a time of critical need, until long-term resources can be requested, dispatched and arrive to the fire.

As a department, we want to do everything we can to help other communities in need, and they, in turn, will do the same for us if needed in Boulder.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the Aspen Acres fire and the other fires around the state.

We had a crew of 3 and a brush truck as well as a task force leader, respond yesterday to assist on the Aspen Acres Fire near Pueblo. When this fire exceeded the capabilities of the local jurisdictions, they requested assistance through the Colorado Mutual Aid Systems (CMAS). This is a system that can gather resources from throughout the state in order to assist. Our crew will plan on being there for the next several days. We wish them the best and our thoughts go out to everyone affected by this fire. Please stay safe this holiday week! The fire danger is real.

Our hearts are broken to hear of the devastating loss on the western slope. The firefighting community, while large in numbers, is still a family and we all feel a sense of grief when tragedy strikes. We will continue to keep the families, colleagues and friends in our thoughts as they navigate this terrible loss.

To all of our wildland firefighting brothers and sisters, we stand with you.

We are saddened to share the identities of the three firefighters we lost responding to the Knowles Fire in western Colorado on Saturday. The firefighters were assigned to the R***e Helitack crew and were engaged in initial attack operations on the Knowles Fire when the incident occurred.

The deceased firefighters have been identified as:
💜Emily Barker, 38, of Clinton Township, Michigan, assigned to the U.S. Forest Service R***e Helitack.

💜Nick Hutcherson, 27 of Glendale, Arizona, assigned to the U.S. Forest Service Kaibab National Forest.

💜Sydney Watson, 27, of Warrior, Alabama, assigned to the U.S. Wildland Fire Service R***e Helitack.

Two additional firefighters were injured during the incident and are receiving medical care.

“We mourn the loss of three firefighters who answered the call to protect others and made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their fellow citizens,” said U.S. Wildland Fire Service Chief Brian Fennessy. “Our thoughts are with their families, loved ones, friends and crewmates as they face an unimaginable loss. These firefighters embodied the courage, professionalism and selflessness that define the wildland fire service. Please join me and my family in keeping our thoughts and prayers with the families of the fallen and our injured firefighters and their families.”
