The Museum of Boulder is excited to host a Holiday Art Fair on Saturday, December 12 and Sunday, December 13, from 10 AM - 4 PM!

We’re inviting local artists and makers to sell original artwork and creative gifts during a festive weekend at the museum. Admission to the Art Fair will be free to the public, with food, drinks, holiday shopping, and more throughout the weekend. The artist booths will be indoors.

⏳ Did you know…

… a Paul McCartney album features recordings from Boulder’s Folsom Field?

On May 26, 1993, Paul McCartney brought his New World Tour to Folsom Field, performing for more than 37,000 fans. But Boulder wasn’t just another stop on the tour: recordings from the Folsom Field concert, including performances of Beatles classics “Michelle” and “Penny Lane,” along with “Let Me Roll It” and “Live and Let Die,” were later featured on McCartney’s official live album, Paul Is Live, preserving a piece of Boulder’s music history on a McCartney record. Color footage of McCartney performing “Let Me Roll It” at Folsom Field was also featured in the accompanying Paul Is Live concert film.

You’ve probably driven down Valmont Road, but do you know the history hiding in plain sight? 👀

Valmont: Hidden in Plain Sight, in partnership with Historic Boulder Inc., opens tomorrow at the Museum of Boulder! The new exhibit explores the remarkable history surrounding Valmont Butte. It has been a place of community and displacement, resources and refuse, the sacred and the contaminated, industry and leisure.

Then, join us Wednesday, October 14 for a special opening reception celebrating the exhibit.

Member Preview: 5:00 to 6:00 PM, FREE for Museum of Boulder and Historic Boulder members

Public Reception: 6:00 to 7:30 PM, $10 admission with food, b**r, w**e, and a special cocktail inspired by Valmont’s agricultural heritage

⏳ Did you know…

… The Eagles played Tulagi in Boulder before they were famous? 🦅

In December 1971, a newly formed Eagles came to Boulder to play a series of shows at Tulagi, the legendary music venue that once stood at 1129 13th Street on University Hill. The band hadn’t released an album yet, and the crowds were small, reportedly ranging from just a handful of people to around 30.

On a particularly cold night, Tulagi’s heater wasn’t working, and Eagles guitarist and banjo player Bernie Leadon performed wearing gloves.

Longtime Colorado music historian G. Brown, then a CU student working at Tulagi, later recalled the Eagles reportedly saying they were going to be “the biggest band in the world.” Just months later, they released their debut album and were quickly on their way to becoming one of the biggest rock bands of the decade.

And the Eagles weren’t the only big name to play Tulagi. During its years on The Hill, the legendary Boulder music venue hosted artists including Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, ZZ Top and the Doobie Brothers.

⏳ Did you know...
.. CU Boulder banned large rock concerts for decades because of Van Halen? 🤘

Van Halen’s 1986 concert at Folsom Field was reportedly so loud and fans got so out of hand that, afterward, CU’s Board of Regents passed a resolution effectively banning rock concerts at the stadium.

Rock concerts had been a summer staple at Folsom Field throughout the 1970s and first half of the 1980s, but complaints came from Boulder residents that the concerts sometimes drew rowdy fans who used nearby lawns as restrooms, drank too much, used drugs and caused massive traffic jams throughout the city.

Concerts became increasingly rare at Folsom in the years that followed. After a Dave Matthews Band concert in 2001 ran past its curfew, concerts at the stadium were suspended altogether for 15 years.

Live music finally returned to Folsom Field in 2016 with Dead & Company, beginning a new era of concerts at the stadium. Since then, Folsom has hosted Dead & Company, ODESZA, Tyler Childers, Phish, John Summit, Mumford & Sons and RÜFÜS DU SOL.

The project is working to preserve and share the story of the Mall through oral histories, historic photographs and materials, written histories, and anniversary celebrations - including a 2027 exhibit and program at the Museum of Boulder.

The Museum of Boulder is proud to partner with the Mapleton Hill Rummage Sale, returning Saturday, August 29 from 8am - 2pm!

More than 60 neighborhood yard sales, bake sales, lemonade stands, and fundraisers will take place throughout historic Mapleton Hill.

While you’re out treasure hunting, stop by the Museum of Boulder! We’ll have our restrooms open for rummage sale visitors and are offering BOGO (Buy One, Get One Free) museum admission all day.
