NAICJA announces with heavy hearts the passing of former NAICJA Board President, the Honorable Richard C. Blake.

Judge Blake, a proud member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe, devoted his life’s work to strengthening tribal courts and supporting justice systems in Indian Country. He served as Chief Judge of the Hoopa Valley Tribal Court, as Chief Judge of the Redding Rancheria Tribal Court, and as an Appellate Judge for the Cow Creek Tribe.

NAICJA extends its heartfelt condolences to Judge Blake’s family, the Hoopa Valley Tribe, Redding Rancheria, and all who knew and worked alongside him. He will be deeply missed.

Last week, NAICJA staff and board attended and presented at the Breaking Cycles of Violence Conference hosted by the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women (CSVANW) in Albuquerque, NM.

We invited justice system professionals, advocates, tribal leaders, and community partners to explore practical strategies, tools, and cross-system supports that can be implemented within tribal communities to help break cycles of violence and enhance community safety. Stay tuned as we continue to develop this project.

🙌 Many thanks for CSVANW and Isleta Pueblo for their hospitality!
