Last week brought a win for free speech and advocacy. ⚖️

The First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that Monterey Bay Aquarium has the right to speak freely about issues of public concern, including the sustainability of seafood choices.

The Aquarium faced a defamation lawsuit from businesses and associations in Maine’s lobster industry after adding American lobster to its “red list” of unsustainable seafood, due to the risk that lobster fishing gear poses to critically endangered North Atlantic right whales.

CLF filed an amicus brief in support of the Aquarium, defending its right to raise science-backed concerns about environmental threats. While CLF has supported alternatives like on-demand fishing gear that reduces risks to marine mammals, organizations must be able to speak openly about environmental challenges without fear of being silenced through litigation.

This decision reinforces an essential principle: environmental advocates must be free to speak out to protect our planet.

Millions of people who care about environmental issues did not vote in the last presidential election. That gap raises an important question: what might elections look like if more of those voters participated?

It’s easy to think your vote doesn’t matter, especially when the issues feel bigger than any one person. But your vote carries more weight than you might think.

Local and state elections have a direct impact on the places we live, from clean water and public lands to transportation, development, and climate policy.

As midterm elections approach on November 3, take a few minutes to make sure you’re registered, know what’s on your ballot, and have a plan to vote. 🗳️

Happy Octopus Day! 🐙 We brought Miss Abyss to New England to share the message: Our ocean is not for sale.

Octopuses like Miss Abyss will be just one of countless species harmed or killed if the Trump administration allows seafloor mining in the Atlantic. Destructive, extractive mining would irreparably harm vibrant seabed habitats, and the animals that call them home.

Take a break from the news to celebrate a win for Atlantic cod! 🐟

NOAA is taking an important step toward rebuilding cod populations by requiring new and improved recovery plans that use the latest science.

Hundreds of you joined our campaign calling for science-based action, and together, we’ve achieved a necessary victory to set New England’s beloved fish on a path to recovery.

Here’s to healthier oceans and a future for one of New England’s most iconic fish. 💙

Some of the wildest places in our national forests are wild precisely because they don’t have roads running through them. 🌲❌🛣️

Roadless areas provide habitat for wildlife, protect clean water, and offer places for people to hike, camp, fish, ski, hunt, and experience forests with fewer signs of development. Here in New England, that includes roadless areas in the White Mountain National Forest.

The Forest Service is considering a proposal that would remove the nationwide Roadless Rule and change how these areas are protected.

The public comment period ends TODAY, October 6. Tell the Forest Service to keep protections for our roadless forests:

The ocean floor is not an empty landscape waiting to be mined.

Deep beneath the surface are coral gardens, sponges, sea vents, underwater mountains, and ecosystems we’re only beginning to understand. Yet the Trump administration is pushing to expand deep-sea mining — a practice that could permanently damage these habitats, disrupt ocean food webs, threaten fisheries, and put already endangered North Atlantic right whales at even greater risk.

And for what? Minerals that we’re increasingly finding ways to use less of and aren’t necessary for a clean energy future.

More gas, more pollution, BUT same miles? Unacceptable. That’s why we’re taking Trump to court. Less efficient cars mean more money spent at the pump and more pollution in the air.

Federal rules required automakers to improve gas mileage in new cars and trucks. The Trump administration is lowering the bar. CLF and our partners are suing to stop them. We're taking this fight to court to protect drivers' wallets, reduce harmful pollution, and defend standards that help make vehicles more affordable to own and operate.
