🚨🚨North Carolina lawmakers are pushing constitutional amendments that could impact our communities for generations.

These proposals would:
❌Cap personal income taxes.
❌Limit property tax funding.
❌Expand “Right to Work” policies (The vote on the right-to-work amendment will be tomorrow, on Wednesday, May 20th, at 3:30pm. We will gather outside the General Assembly starting at 2:45pm and plan to pack the Senate gallery)

These changes could weaken workers’ rights, reduce public funding, and shift more economic pressure onto working families and local communities.
Now is the time to pay attention and take action before these measures reach the ballot this November.
Our communities deserve investment, dignity, and policies that support working people, not deeper inequality.

On May Day, United for a Fair Economy played a lead role in organizing a major action in Durham. By holding regular meetings, creating communication material and logistical support, UFE helped unite the voices and vision of labor organizations such as the Durham Workers Assembly, Union of Southern Service Workers, UE150, CAUSE (the Amazon union), the Duke Graduate Student Union, and other worker, immigrant, and left organizations. At the same time, the North Carolina Association of Educators staged a mass action, titled “Kids Over Corporations.” Over 80,000 teachers either called out of work or were absent because their districts canceled classes. This past weekend, 17 leaders and changemakers from Alabama, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and beyond joined us for our annual Spring Training of Trainers on the theme "Bound Up Together: Healing & Resistance in Wartime." Held at the Avila Center for Community Leadership, we spent 4 beautiful days learning and growing together, immersed in bilingual dialogue, interactive activities, ceremony & ritual, art, Circle, and opportunities to practice facilitating and training others. It was powerful to talk about taxes, the financing of wars, inequities, and what could be funded with our money if wars were not financed. Participants brought skills, analyses, and ways of being back home to support economic and racial justice struggles in their communities.

Did you know? Each year, immigrant communities contribute tens of billions of dollars in taxes—funding schools, healthcare, infrastructure, and essential public services. And yet, these same communities are denied access to the very benefits they help sustain. This contradiction is not accidental; it reflects a broader economic system that prioritizes wealth accumulation for a few while extracting labor and resources from the majority.

What would it look like if our tax system were truly aligned with our collective needs? What if we invested in care instead of war? In housing instead of displacement? In education and healthcare instead of militarization? Read more: https://www.faireconomy.org/our_taxes_our_priorities_investing_in_care_not_war
=====
