CONNECTING STRUGGLES ACROSS BORDERS: UFE HOSTS CONVERSATION ON THE CRISIS AT GUATEMALA’S PUBLIC UNIVERSITY: The University of San Carlos of Guatemala (USAC), the country's only public university, has been facing an institutional crisis since the controversial election of Rector Walter Mazariegos in 2022. With the Centro Comunitario de Trabajadores (CCT), we co-hosted an event to understand the situation and build solidarity across borders. When students are criminalized for organizing, when public institutions are weakened, when communities are excluded from decision making, or when those who challenge systems of power are punished, these struggles are not isolated from one another. CONECTANDO LUCHAS MÁS ALLÁ DE LAS FRONTERAS: UFE ORGANIZA UN DIÁLOGO SOBRE LA CRISIS EN LA UNIVERSIDAD PÚBLICA DE GUATEMALA: La Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC), la única universidad pública del país, atraviesa una crisis institucional desde la polémica elección del rector Walter Mazariegos en 2022. Junto con el Centro Comunitario de Trabajadores (CCT), organizamos un evento para comprender la situación y fomentar la solidaridad transfronteriza. Cuando se criminaliza a los estudiantes por organizarse, cuando se debilitan las instituciones públicas, cuando se excluye a las comunidades de la toma de decisiones o cuando se castiga a quienes desafían los sistemas de poder, estas luchas no son aisladas entre sí. UFE stands in solidarity with immigrant farmworkers organizing for dignity, justice, and respect.

This Friday, September 4, Migrant Justice / Justicia Migrante and farmworkers from across Vermont will gather in Quincy, MA, as part of the Milk with Dignity campaign—a worker-led effort calling on major dairy buyers to protect farmworkers’ labor and housing rights.
Farmworkers deserve safe working conditions, dignified housing, and a meaningful voice in the systems that depend on their labor.

UFE se solidariza con los trabajadores agrícolas inmigrantes que se organizan en pos de la dignidad, la justicia y el respeto.

Este viernes 4 de septiembre, la organización Migrant Justice y trabajadores agrícolas de todo Vermont se reunirán en Quincy, Massachusetts, como parte de la campaña "Milk with Dignity" (Leche con Dignidad), una iniciativa liderada por los propios trabajadores que exige a los grandes compradores de productos lácteos proteger los derechos laborales y de vivienda de quienes trabajan en el campo.

Los trabajadores agrícolas merecen condiciones laborales seguras, una vivienda digna y una voz significativa en los sistemas que dependen de su trabajo.

The Movement Sustainability Commons, UFE, and Neighbors United for a Better East Boston (NUBE) came together last Saturday for a day of circle work and healing in community with NUBE's youth group, board members, volunteer leaders, and invited community members. Participants spent the day connecting to their intentions and purpose, sharing the impacts of the weights they carry for the community, and reflecting about what they need to be whole and make the work sustainable.

A recent Substack piece by Paul Krugman on billionaire powermaxxing echos the story UFE has been telling for decades: "Low taxes on the hyper-wealthy feed a downward spiral of oligarchy in which low taxes make it easier for huge fortunes to grow even larger, and in which the power of vast wealth keeps increasing, leading to even more favorable policies for the few. This downward spiral has been taking place for decades. As I said, the real question about the backlash against billionaires is why it didn’t happen sooner.” (hat tip to former staffer Mike Prokosch for resurfacing these old - and still on-point - graphics)

Un reciente artículo de Paul Krugman en Substack sobre la acumulación de poder por parte de los multimillonarios se hace eco de la historia que UFE lleva décadas contando: «Los bajos impuestos a los hiperricos alimentan una espiral descendente de oligarquía en la que los bajos impuestos facilitan que las enormes fortunas crezcan aún más, y en la que el poder de la inmensa riqueza sigue aumentando, lo que conduce a políticas aún más favorables para unos pocos.
