So much of what we do at Doc Wayne involves movement, activity, and social connection to improve mental health, and a number of recent studies suggest that even just watching sports can have a positive impact on well-being. Whether in a stadium, with a group of friends, or alone at home, watching live sports builds a sense of community, connection, and togetherness that directly increases mental well-being.

Here in Boston, we experienced this first-hand when the World Cup came to our city as countless fans from countries across the globe converged to cheer on their teams. Despite differences in culture, language, and the teams we root for, the event brought out the best in all of us. So even if you can't get on the field yourself this summer, be sure to cheer for your favorite teams—you'll be better for it!

🏸🏀 Doc Wayne Field Day 2026 🥏🏅

We had so much fun at our annual field day earlier this month! The event saw member of the Doc Wayne team come together for an afternoon of competition, games, and some delicious catered sandwiches. Doc Wayne is all about using movement to improve mental health, so what better way to celebrate the team's hard work this past year than to get outside and get moving! Thank you to our dedicated staff for their continued efforts towards furthering our mission—we can't do it without you!

During Mental Health Awareness Month, the Doc Wayne team had the opportunity to collaborate with Building Impact in engaging Takeda employees in a meaningful day of service. The experience began with an interactive session where we shared more about Doc Wayne's sports-based therapy model, followed by Takeda volunteers contributing to our wishlist and assembling 100 Mind & Motion Backpacks for youth in our programs!

We are so grateful to Building Impact for bringing together purpose-driven corporate partners like Takeda to support organizations like ours. To our Takeda Volunteers, thank you so much for your generosity and enthusiasm. These kits support young people with accessible tools to manage stress, process emotions, and practice the coping strategies they’re learning through our sports-based therapy program. For many of the youth we serve, having something they can call their own reinforces a sense of stability, confidence, and care. These Mind & Motion kits also help extend the impact of our sessions beyond the field or therapy space, empowering kids to build resilience, strengthen relationships, and carry these skills into their everyday lives.

Last night, former UCLA Bruin and current Washington Mystics Center Lauren Betts took home the ESPY for Best College Athlete in Women's Sports. A consistent advocate for mental health throughout her career, she took time during her speech to discuss the importance of mental health for herself and others.

"The strongest people aren't the ones who never struggle," she noted, "they're the ones who have the courage to let someone walk through the struggle with them."

Betts has often used her platform to discuss the importance of mental health including a recent Players' Tribune article in which she spoke candidly about her struggles with mental health. According to Betts, mental health is the basis for everything one does—on the field and off. Thanks to athletes and advocates like Betts, we are continuing to break down stigmas surrounding mental health. Whether you're an athlete or not, everyone deserves access to quality mental health support.
