On , we’re celebrating women like Eufemenia, who are building opportunities for the next generation, one block at a time.

A mother of five in Panama, Eufemenia works hard to support her daughters while encouraging them to pursue the education she never had the opportunity to receive.

When her community partnered with School the World to build two new classrooms, she stepped forward. She learned to glue blocks, tie rods, cut wood, and weld, helping lead the construction alongside other mothers and community members.

“I want my daughters to have the opportunity that I did not have. I will support them so they can move forward.”

Eufemenia’s story is a reminder that rural women are not only supporting their families, they are strengthening their communities and helping build a future where the next generation has more opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive.

October 11 is International Day of the Girl Child, a day to recognize every girl’s right to shape her own future.
This year’s theme calls for an end to child marriage and greater protection of girls’ rights to make decisions about their lives.

It is well documented that education delays the age of marriage and increases gender equality. When girls stay in school, they grow their confidence, and imagine possibilities beyond traditional expectations.

School the World’s research in rural Guatemala shows how education helps girls and women restore interrupted dreams, build confidence, and create new opportunities for themselves and their families.

Education gives girls more time, more choices, and a stronger voice in deciding what comes next.

We’re thinking of our friends in Panama following Friday’s earthquake and aftershocks.

We’re relieved that our team in the Ngäbe-Buglé comarca is safe, though the experience has left them shaken.

We’re staying in close contact with our staff, listening to what they’re experiencing and considering what support may be needed as more information comes in.

Next week, we’ll check the schools we support for damage. Our hearts are with our colleagues, the children and families we work with, and everyone affected across Panama.

Amelia’s mom, Crisanta, never had the chance to continue her own education past the third grade. “My pencil was a hoe, and my notebook, farming.” Today, she hopes Amelia can build a future with more possibilities.

Today, with a School the World Scholarship, Amelia studies at night by the flashlight on her mother’s phone and dreams of being a preschool teacher.

: Fabian Bejerano doesn’t have to imagine the challenges many students in Panama’s Ngäbe-Buglé Comarca face. He grew up there.

After leaving his community to continue his own education and train as a teacher, Fabian returned with a commitment to help students see what education can make possible.

Today, as a School the World Change Agent, he uses his experience to encourage students to keep learning, even when the path is difficult.

“We study so that we can return, contribute, and help.”

Fabian’s story is also a reminder of why local and Indigenous leadership matters. His cultural knowledge, relationships, and lived experience help us build programs that reflect the realities of the communities we serve.

Today, we’re celebrating the teachers who inspire, encourage, and empower students to see what’s possible.

Across the communities in rural Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and the Philippines, teachers are at the heart of School the World’s work. From supporting literacy and learning recovery to strengthening classrooms and guiding students through our programs, their dedication helps create lasting opportunities for children and families in the communities we serve.

: “Your perspective on the world changes so much just by being on the trip.”

For Lily, a junior at Brookline High School and School the World Ambassador, her first Student Service Learning trip to Panama was filled with many moments that changed her perspective.

A young girl who wanted to spend the day by her side, even without a shared language. A rainy basketball game that turned into an afternoon of playing alongside local kids. And conversations with School the World staff that gave her a new understanding of the opportunities she has at home.

“I think I really needed to be reminded that... I don’t have those kinds of obstacles. I have a very clear path.”

Lily returned home with a renewed appreciation for her education, a deeper understanding of community, and a desire to keep serving. Now, she’s hoping to join us in Guatemala for her next trip.
