WalkMassachusetts makes walking safer and easier in Massachusetts to encourage better health, a cleaner environment and more vibrant communities. Working on walking takes us across Massachusetts to empower people with knowledge and proven strategies to make their own communities more walkable. Our small, committed staff work as a team to make change: whether it’s getting a crosswalk painted in a neighborhood, or influencing Massachusetts state policy to make streets safer for all. WalkMassachusetts is committed to better understanding, identifying, and undoing the racist processes and policies that lead to inequities in the walking environment for communities of color across the Commonwealth. We are deepening our engagement in meaningful program and organizational strategies that lead with racial justice. WalkMassachusetts is actively seeking to build a diverse staff. We encourage multiple perspectives and experiences, support a multicultural environment, and strive to hire and retain a diverse workforce that reflects the populations we work with and the communities where we work.

⚠️ October marks National Pedestrian Safety Month, a dedicated time to highlight the safety of vulnerable road users, raise awareness, and advocate for targeted infrastructure improvements across our communities. In line with this observance, we are sharing the stats for our 2025 fatal pedestrian crash report.

⚠️ In 2025 alone, 13 communities recorded multiple pedestrian crash deaths, led by Boston 8, Springfield (6), and Holyoke, Lowell, West Springfield, and Worcester (3 each).

⚠️ A deeper five-year trend analysis highlights recurring danger zones. Boston, Springfield, and Brockton have consistently recorded at least 2 pedestrian crash fatalities every single year over the five-year period spanning 2021 through 2025.

⚠️ These findings underscore that pedestrian fatalities are preventable, localized, and concentrated. Addressing these fatal crash corridors requires immediate implementation of proven Vision Zero strategies:

-Speed management and calming infrastructure
-Improved crosswalk visibility and signal timing (such as Leading Pedestrian Intervals)
-Targeted road redesigns in persistent high-crash municipalities

October is Pedestrian Safety Month. While national trends show progress in road safety, Massachusetts is moving backward. 🚨

We cannot accept rising pedestrian fatalities as an inevitable cost of transportation. It’s time for:
* Statewide policy changes
* Lower speed limits in residential areas
* Dedicated funding for walkability and safe crossings

This must stop. 🛑

43% of pedestrians killed in Massachusetts are 65 or older. That’s unacceptable.

Short crosswalk timers, wide intersections, and fast-turning cars make simple trips dangerous for older neighbors. Fixes like longer signal times, traffic calming, and raised crosswalks aren't complicated—they save lives.

We need streets built for everyone, including our parents and grandparents.

October is National , but the data shows we have a long way to go right here at home.

Nearly 1 in 7 Massachusetts communities suffered at least one pedestrian death in the past year. Pedestrian safety isn't just a city issue—it affects neighborhoods, towns, and roadways across the entire Commonwealth.

Every single one of these lost lives was preventable. This month, we’re highlighting the reality of walking in MA and demanding safer streets for everyone.

On Wednesday, October 7th at 12:00 PM, Safe Streets Needham is partnering with WalkMassachusetts to conduct a walk audit of Needham Center!

We’ll walk the area together to document current street conditions, focusing on issues like dangerous intersections, missing curb ramps, and broken sidewalks.

People are still dying on our streets. The loss of advocates like Louisa Gag and Prof. Thomas Rose shows we must keep fighting at every level.
What we’re demanding:

State: Legislators must introduce and support a “Stop Super Speeders” bill requiring GPS speed limiters for repeat reckless drivers.

City: Boston must accelerate street-safety commitments.

Federal: Defend threatened cycling & pedestrian funding.
