Woolley Institute for Spoken-Language Education Alabama School for Hearing was born out of a joint effort between Children's HEAR Center and The Alabama Ear Institute.

The Woolley Institute for Spoken-Language Education (WISE), formerly the Alabama Ear Institute is a not for profit dedicated to teaching deaf children to speak. In 2018, our organization became the Woolley Institute for Spoken-Language Education (WISE). Our Goal is to create a learning environment that is similar to traditional preschool, while addressing the unique needs of children with hearing loss that have chosen a spoken language approach to communication. We are committed to helping children further develop their listening, language, and speech skills in a positive and fun learning environment. Children are placed in low teacher-to-student ratio groups based on their listening age and language abilities. All classroom activities are designed to improve auditory skills, vocabulary, concepts, conversational skills, sentence structure, and speech skills. ⭐️Meet Teagan, one of our 2026 WISE Ambassadors!⭐️

🤍 Diagnosed with moderate to severe hearing loss as an infant, Teagan began wearing hearing aids at just 3 months old. She spent three incredible years at WISE, where she not only received vital early intervention but also found a sense of community that empowered her family.

🩵 Now a thriving 4th grader, Teagan reads on a 12th grade level and dreams of becoming a veterinarian or zoologist! Her journey shows the lifelong impact of early access to listening and spoken language services and why WISE exists.

✨ Welcome, Dr. Tammi Dahle! ✨

We’re thrilled to welcome Tammi Stewart Dahle, Ph.D., NCC, LPC, LPC-SC to the WISE staff!

Dr. Dahle brings more than 25 years of experience in counseling, higher education, leadership, and student services to her role as Associate Director at WISE. Her WISE journey began as a parent of a WISE student, and she later served for a decade on the WISE Board of Directors. Making her newest role a meaningful continuation of her connection to our WISE family and community.

A Birmingham native and University of Montevallo and University of Alabama graduate, Dr. Dahle has dedicated her career to supporting students, families, and communities. We’re so excited to have her experience, heart, and leadership on our team!

Congratulations to Elizabeth Kelly, one of our speech pathologists, on earning the LSLS Cert. AVEd credential!

The LSL specialist certification process takes 3-5 years to complete and includes many hours of coursework, collaboration with mentors, and passing of a rigorous certification exam. Prior to officially joining the WISE team in 2022, Elizabeth also completed her final internship of graduate school as a student clinician at WISE! We are so proud of her and our incredible team serving our kids and families!
