🐾 ETHICAL CORRECTIONS IN DOG TRAINING – PART 3 🐾

The Difference Between Guidance, Interruption and Correction

One of the biggest mistakes dog owners make is treating guidance, interruption, and correction as if they are the same thing.

They aren’t.

✅ Guidance teaches the dog what TO do.
✅ Interruption stops the dog from making a poor choice.
✅ Correction makes a behaviour less likely to happen again.

Think of it this way:

🐕 Guidance = Education
🛑 Interruption = Pause
⚖️ Correction = Consequence

For example:

A dog jumps up on visitors.

➡️ Guidance: Teach four paws on the floor.
➡️ Interruption: Block the jump before it happens.
➡️ Correction: Attention disappears if the dog jumps anyway.

Three different tools.

Three different purposes.

The problem is that many owners skip guidance and move straight to correction, while others guide endlessly but never provide consequences.

The formula most owners need is simple:

✔️ Guide first.
✔️ Interrupt early.
✔️ Correct fairly when necessary.

Good dog training isn’t about using more pressure.

It’s about using the right tool at the right time.

Because clarity creates confidence, and confident dogs make better choices.

Welcome Dutch!

Dutch is a big, goofy boy recently sprung from the Burbank Animal Shelter after being evaluated by our wonderful volunteer Jennifer. Dutch is about 18 months old, neutered and up to date on shots. He did well in playgroup at the shelter, getting along nicely with other dogs. He can be a bit aloof to start, but warms up quickly. He enjoys playing with toys and exercising that big brain of his. Currently he knows how to sit and walk nicely on lead. Stay tuned for more information as we learn more about this big, sweet boy! We are so excited to learn more about this handsome guy and what his ideal furever home is!

Many thanks to his foster Marie for driving down to get Dutch and giving him a place in her lovely home.

Thanks to each and every volunteer who helped us get Dutch out of the shelter and on the road to his perfect forever! We couldn't do any of this without you.

1. We need EXPERIENCED fosters! These dogs need someone familiar with working breeds, dedicate time to decompression, training and socialization!

2. We need Adoption Ninjas so we can intake dogs and place them with fosters in the first place! Each dog needs an Adoption Ninja who works with the foster to place the dog in an appropriate forever home!
We need folks experienced with training and the breed, good at asking difficult questions and making hard decisions!
