Bellingham has its official bird! Every sighting of a great blue heron is a gift. May we protect their land & nests as we share this common home!

We have a winner! The official Bird of Bellingham is….

The Great Blue Heron!

These spectacular birds are a common sight in Bellingham, and well known for their large rookeries at Post Point and Little Squalicum Park. Although known for hunting alone, the Great Blue Herons are populous enough in this area that it is far from unusual to see a line of herons along beaches. With their stately looks, wide wingspan, and prehistoric calls, they are birds you are not likely to forget.

Great Blue Herons ambush their prey, standing stock still before striking lightning quick. Their adapted neck vertebrae act as a hinge, letting their neck snap out milliseconds. They have even been known to try a hunting method known as “canopy feeding.” By spreading out their wings to create a shaded canopy, their prey come right to them. And their prey is quite varied, with the species going for nearly anything within striking distance, from frogs to fish to small birds.

Thank you to everyone that voted for our new Bird of Bellingham!

Our Siblings

All my relatives.
Every living creature
Every bird that flies
Every fish that swims
Every animal that walks the earth:

In the great family of Spirit
The spirals of kinship
Weave us all into relationship
Mutual, caring, connected.

Since all that Spirit does is done in love
All that Spirit created was created in love.
There are no orphans left standing alone
For all are embraced by the compassion
Of a common Creator.

How well we treat our siblings
Is how well we honor our Maker.

Every year our favorite Bellingham movie theater The Pickford hosts Doctober, a month long celebration of documentary film. This year they are showing a film: Shalom, next Monday evening 10/12, and we will watch it as our gathering for the evening!

This documentary looks at the conflicts across religion and culture in Israel from a Palestinian Muslim, an Israel Jew and the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo. After the film we will have the option to discuss the film and go for a bite to eat/beverage at a nearby restaurant.

SHALOM: Set within the unlikely refuge of the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo, Shalom unfolds as a deeply moving and unexpectedly resonant portrait of care, coexistence, and life amid conflict. At the center of the film is Shalom, a beloved rhinoceros whose declining health forces a difficult reckoning for the people who care for him. Among them are Rushdi, a Palestinian Muslim from East Jerusalem, and Gilad, an Israeli Jew from West Jerusalem, whose differing views on how to respond to Shalom’s suffering reveal larger questions about responsibility, compassion, and the meaning of freedom. As visitors from across Jerusalem's religious, ethnic, and political divides wander the zoo's pathways, war and political turmoil intensify beyond its gates, casting a shadow over this fragile shared space. When Shalom's story comes to an end, new challenges emerge with the arrival of another rhinoceros and an unusual task: finding a way for two powerful male rhinos to coexist within a confined habitat. Rich with humor, tenderness, and unexpected symbolism, Shalom transforms the daily rhythms of a zoo into a poignant reflection on captivity, coexistence, and the enduring hope for peace in a deeply divided land.
