You probably knew Dolly Parton as a singer, songwriter, actor and philanthropist.

But did you know she was also a 4-H kid? 🍀

Dolly grew up in rural East Tennessee and participated in 4-H as a child. And while her life eventually took her far beyond those Tennessee mountains, she never stopped investing in kids and their potential.

Her Imagination Library began in her home county in Tennessee and grew to put books into the hands of millions of children around the world.

It’s a fitting legacy for a former 4-H’er, and a reminder that you never really know where the interests, experiences and opportunities a child has today might lead them tomorrow.

Today, we’re remembering one very special 4-H alum.

🎡 There's lots to discover at the Barnstable County Fair!

Beyond the rides and fair food, you'll find the Youth Building, where Barnstable County 4-H members and Cape Cod youth showcase their creativity, talents, and hard work through exhibits, artwork, and hands-on activities.

While you're visiting, be sure to stop by the 4-H Kitchen! Cape Cod 4-H youth and volunteers serve up family-friendly comfort food while building leadership, teamwork, and customer service skills. It's one more way local youth help make the Barnstable County Fair a special place each summer.

Then take a stroll through the Demonstration Garden with the Master Gardener Association of Cape Cod, a peaceful oasis filled with flowers, vegetables, pollinators, and gardening inspiration.

Whether you're looking to learn something new, be inspired, or simply enjoy a quieter corner of the fair, Cape Cod Cooperative Extension has something for everyone.

🎡 The Barnstable County Fair is here! 🎡

One of our favorite stops? The Youth Building, where you'll find these imaginative Felt Fellows and many other projects created by local youth.

These whimsical wool creations were handcrafted during a Barnstable County 4-H needle felting workshop, but they're just one example of what 4-H members have been learning all year long.

🌻 From growing sunflowers and building dog agility equipment to exploring Cape Cod aquaculture and creating fiber art, 4-H helps young people build confidence, curiosity, and lifelong skills through hands-on learning.

🐶 Practice makes paws-itive!

The Salty Pups 4-H Dog Club is getting ready for the Barnstable County Fair, and that means more than training their dogs. Club members recently built their own agility jump, learning teamwork, problem-solving, and responsible animal care along the way.

You can cheer them on during the 4-H Dog Showcase on Thursday, July 23, at 6 p.m. in the Livestock Show Ring!

The Dog Club is just one example of how Barnstable County 4-H helps young people learn by doing. This year, members have also created whimsical Felt Fellows, explored Cape Cod aquaculture, and introduced plant science to classrooms across the Cape through the Sunflower Science program.

🎉 Three more years of boots on the ground for Cape Cod!

That's what this $1.5 million federal grant means for AmeriCorps Cape Cod and the communities they serve.

If you've volunteered at a conservation project, seen a trail restoration, or partnered on one of Extension's community initiatives, there's a good chance you've worked alongside an AmeriCorps member.

We've had the privilege of partnering with AmeriCorps Cape Cod on projects that protect our natural resources, strengthen local food systems, support coastal resilience, and serve communities across the Cape.

From staffing emergency shelters during this winter's historic blizzard to restoring trails, protecting wetlands, and supporting community projects, AmeriCorps members show up when Cape Cod needs them most.

This new funding means that work continues. AmeriCorps members will keep partnering with local governments, nonprofits, schools, and community organizations to protect the places we love, help communities prepare for emergencies, and strengthen communities across Cape Cod.

Congratulations to the entire AmeriCorps Cape Cod team on this well-deserved investment. We're grateful to work alongside you and can't wait to see what the next three years bring.

🧶Felting, fiber art, and a whole lot of creativity
Last week, Barnstable County 4-H youth got hands-on with the art of needle felting during a special workshop led by Escher Cattle, who proved he’s not just Cape Cod Cooperative Extension's bug guy… he’s an artist too!

Participants learned the basics of felting and created their own “Felt Fellows,” which will be displayed in the Youth Building during the Barnstable County Fair 🎡

From creativity and patience to trying something totally new, this is what 4-H is all about 💚

Looking for something meaningful (and screen-free 👀) for your kids to work on this spring?

The 4-H Youth Exhibit Hall at the Barnstable County Fair is a great way for kids to create something they’re proud of and share it with the community this summer.

Youth ages 5 to 18 can enter and you do not need to be in 4-H to participate.

If your child enjoys:
🎨 Drawing or painting
🧁 Baking
🧱 Building with LEGO
🌱 Gardening
📸 Photography
🔬 Science projects

There’s a place for them at the fair.

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about setting a goal, finishing a project, and building confidence along the way.
