CYT Austin A community, a place for children to grow and thrive. Youth may come to learn dance, acting & vocals, but they leave with character, wisdom and confidence.

Founded in 1981 with affiliates across the nation, Christian Youth Theater (CYT) is an after-school theater arts training program for kids. CYT has grown to be the largest youth theater in the nation and trains thousands of kids each year. The CYT affiliate in Austin, TX is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization. Every session (fall, winter and spring) CYT offers theater arts classes for children as an after-school activity. Each local program conducts three ten-week sessions throughout the school year, teaching drama, voice, dance and a broad spectrum of specialty theatrical workshops at weekly two-hour classes. Enrolled students have the opportunity to work behind the scenes, or audition and perform on stage in a Broadway-style musical performed for the community. Additional performance opportunities are available to CYT students who may participate in CYT Tour Groups performing musical reviews for community and civic functions. Internships, director training, teacher aiding, and being an inclusion aide are other ways for older students to gain additional training and experience. College credit is available for the director internship program through a local accredited college.

Before she ever set foot in a CYT classroom, Ceci was a little girl in Laredo, TX who couldn’t stop dancing. 🩰✨

Meet Cecilia Proeger, our instructor for Triple Threat Workshop Series: Mastering the Combined Audition!

Ceci grew up training in ballet and tried every other style of dance she could. She spent her teenage summers training at Boston Ballet and Pennsylvania Ballet, and later at the Alvin Ailey American Dance School. After studying at UT, she danced professionally with several Austin companies, including Andrea Ariel Dance Theater and Sharir+Bustamante Dance Works. After ten years away raising three kids, including four years in South Africa, she returned to the stage for Andrea Ariel’s 30th anniversary show.

Ceci is thrilled to help build up the next generation of performers and give students the confidence to walk into any audition room ready to shine. πŸ’ƒπŸ’›

Some shows stay with you. ❄️

Take a look back to Fall 2023, when our stage turned into a winter kingdom for Frozen Jr., directed by Julie Novak. Every rehearsal, costume change, and curtain call came from students who showed up, took risks, and became a family along the way.

That's what we love most about CYT. The sets come down and the costumes go back in storage, but the friendships, the confidence, and the memories stay.

Now a new winter story is on its way. A Christmas Carol hits our stage this November, and we can't wait to make new memories with you. πŸŽ„

Were you part of Frozen Jr. or in the audience? Tell us your favorite moment below! πŸ‘‡

Meet Misty Meadows, our instructor for Stitching the Show: Bringing the Magic of Theater to Life!

Misty has been part of the CYT family since 2017, serving in our costume department. There she gets to combine two things she loves: creativity and problem-solving. She studied education at Baylor University, is married to a fellow creative, and homeschools her three kids.

Misty is passionate about welcoming volunteers of every experience level. She has helped build a costume community where everyone has a place and a part in bringing each production to life. Her hope is to inspire every age to learn something new and share those skills with the world around them. πŸͺ‘πŸ’›

Bah! Humbug? Not this year. 🎩 Join Ebenezer Scrooge on a Christmas Eve he'll never forget, as three ghosts guide him through his Past, Present and Future toward a joyful Christmas morning.

This musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' beloved story features music by Broadway legend Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Little Shop of Horrors) and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime, Seussical, Once on This Island).

It's the perfect way to kick off a new family holiday tradition. πŸŽ„βœ¨

She's been teaching Austin to dance for decades, and she's not slowing down. πŸ’ƒ

Say hello to Carol Feille D'Avila, our instructor for Next Level Jazz/Tap: MJ the Musical!

Carol started The Austin Conservatory of Dance in 1991 as a neighborhood studio teaching classical ballet, jazz, modern, character and tap. It later grew to include musical theatre training. She has also spent 22 years as Executive and Artistic Director of Austin City Ballet, and she is a registered member of the Royal Academy of Dance.

Her own training started early. In high school she danced with the North County Ballet Company in California, under Victor Moreno of the Ballet Russe. She went on to study drama and dance at USC and earned a B.A. in Fine Arts from UC Irvine. Locally, she served two years as President of the Round Rock Council of the Arts, and she choreographed GREASE at the Georgetown Palace Theatre.

In her words, she's had a career in her dream job, and she plans to keep going until she can't. We're so glad part of that journey is happening at CYT Austin! ✨

Last week, the sewing machines came out and something brand new began! πŸͺ‘

Stitching the Show, CYT Austin's first-ever class open to adults, officially kicked off at Hope Chapel. It was a night of new faces, first stitches, and a whole lot of curiosity about what it takes to bring costumes to life.

A big thank-you to Misty Meadows for leading the charge. Misty has been a part of our costume team since 2017, and her passion for the craft (and for the people behind it) made this first class something special. πŸ’›

πŸŒ… Senior Sunrise Breakfast Recap! πŸŒ…

What a morning it was celebrating our incredible Class of 2027! We gathered together with these seniors and their proud parents for a breakfast full of laughter and gratitude.

These seniors rise to the call as leaders, mentors, and they show up for everyone else without even being asked. Watching them grow into who they are today has been one of the greatest joys, and we feel so blessed to have them for the rest of this year.

We already know we're going to miss them more than words can say... but for now, we're soaking up every last minute! πŸ™Œ

Class of 2027, we're so proud of you! πŸ’›

Meet Daniel Martin β€” the voice (and vocal coach!) behind Next Gen Barbershop Harmony.

Dan is a CYT alumnus himself, with a resume of shows including Singin' in the Rain, The Little Mermaid, and The Sound of Music. He majored in vocal music education and now teaches drama at Valor North Austin. And in true "man of many talents" fashion, he's also certified in unarmed stage combat and enjoys juggling hats on occasion.

In his class, students are exploring the rich, layered sound of barbershop harmony: four vocal parts blending into one unforgettable chord.

Catch this talented group of students show off their harmony skills on Thursday, November 5th at Austin Baptist Church!
