Meet the Novian family 🏡✨

Karlie Novian adopted Carson after caring for him from infancy. So when Carson's baby sister Paisley entered foster care, Karlie welcomed her into the family through kinship care. With resources and support from Upbring Foster In Texas in Amarillo, Karlie adjusted to life with both a newborn and a toddler. Today, she is working toward adopting Paisley too.

Carson was still little when Paisley came home, but their bond formed quickly. Karlie remembers how he always wanted to be close to her, even trying to climb into her baby swing just to sit beside her. Now he calls her “sissy,” stops in the middle of playing to kiss her on the head and has a way of making her laugh that no one else does.

As they grow older, Karlie also thinks about what having each other may mean as Carson and Paisley learn more about their family and shared history. She believes that connection will become especially important as they begin to understand and process their story together.

As National Kinship Care Month comes to a close, the Novian family’s story shows one way kinship care can keep important family connections intact when a child enters foster care. Upbring is proud to stand alongside families like Karlie's as they give children the care, stability and sense of belonging that help them thrive. ❤️

There’s something special about getting to experience a The University of Texas at Austin game for the first time 🏈🤘

Brendan is in foster care through Upbring Foster In Texas and plays wide receiver for his high school football team. When he found out he was going to the Texas Longhorns vs. UTSA game and could bring a friend, he could hardly believe it.

A generous donor provided the tickets and spending money for the day, giving Brendan the chance to take in the full game-day experience. He cheered in the stands with his friend, grabbed food at the stadium and picked out new UT gear and memorabilia to take home.

“Brendan was excited from the moment I told him about the game. He said he had never had an opportunity like this before, and while we were there, he kept telling us how glad he was that we had all come and thanking everyone who made it possible,” shared Hope Walker, Area Director for Foster In Texas.

We’re glad Brendan got to spend the day doing something he loves and make memories he'll carry with him. 🧡

Ashleigh’s story has stayed with us and Big Give San Antonio feels like a fitting time to share it again. ✨

After spending part of her teen years at Upbring New Life Children’s Center, where she worked through trauma and uncertainty about her future, Ashleigh went on to become an emergency room nurse serving the San Antonio community, with dreams of becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner.

Her story shows what’s possible when young people have the support and resources to build a future of their own.
