⚠️ New World Screwworm Confirmed in Texas
On June 3, state and federal officials confirmed a case of New World Screwworm (NWS) in a three-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas. This marks the first confirmed case in Texas since the pest was eradicated in the United States in 1966. At this time, no additional cases have been detected in Texas.
Veterinarians, producers and animal owners should remain vigilant and closely monitor animals for wounds, lesions or the presence of larvae. Early detection and reporting are critical to preventing further spread.
State and federal agencies are actively responding, and surveillance and containment efforts are already underway. The Texas Animal Health Commission has additional resources available for veterinarians and animal owners seeking information about identification, reporting and response.
