The Alzheimer’s Care Center welcomed autumn with visits to the Windsor Fairgrounds and a celebration of National Assisted Living and Adult Day Services Week!

At the fair residents explored the museum 4H exhibits, explored historical buildings and took carriage rides!

Other activities included pumpkin mini golf and bobbing for apples. The Litchfield Steppers line dancing entertained everyone with their hot pink cowgirl hats!

Chewonki inspired learning about owls and reminded us that life can be a hoot.

The National Assisted Living and Adult Day Services Week celebration in September included lots of laughs with comedian Gary Crocker, reminiscing about fashion with the Winthrop Historical Society and dancing through the decades with Gardiner High School Honor Society students.

Enjoy the warm smiles, curiosity and playful energy in these photos!

Oct. 11 -17 is Sterile Processing Week, a time dedicated to celebrating one of the teams that supports care from behind the scenes at MaineGeneral.

Our Central Sterile teams at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta and Thayer Center for Health in Waterville help our community stay healthy by preventing infections and ensuring high standards of care.

They make sure our equipment is clean and readily available when needed, using a variety of methods to sterilize instruments including steam, chemicals or gas.

Their work is fast-paced and always active! Central Sterile departments process hundreds, sometimes thousands, of instruments each day to ensure they’re available for surgeries and procedures.

Thank you, Central Sterile team members, for all you do in helping keep everything running smoothly!

Meet Dr. Walter Jongbloed!

Walter Jongbloed, MD, is a general otolaryngologist and member of the active medical staff at MaineGeneral Medical Center. He joined MaineGeneral’s active medical staff in August 2026 and provides comprehensive care at MaineGeneral’s Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) practice at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta and the Thayer Center for Health in Waterville. Dr. Jongbloed has a particular interest in the surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, as well as the management of sinus disease and a broad range of general ENT conditions.

“I am excited to be serving patients throughout Central Maine. I enjoy caring for patients of all ages and treating a broad range of ear, nose and throat conditions,” Dr. Jongbloed shared. “Having recently moved to Maine from Connecticut, I am grateful for the opportunity to become a part of this community, and I am looking forward to building long-term relationships with my patients and their families.”

Outside of work, Dr. Jongbloed enjoys time outdoors. To stay healthy, he tries to stay active by hiking, swimming, kayaking and exploring Maine. He also emphasizes the importance of proper rest and relaxation.

When asked what brings him the most joy in his work, Dr. Jongbloed says he appreciates making a meaningful difference in his patients’ quality of life.

“Many ENT conditions can affect how people sleep, breathe, hear, communicate and function every day. It’s incredibly rewarding to help patients overcome those challenges and get back to doing the things they love so they can live their best and healthiest lives.”

A heartfelt thank you to Michelle Emerson and her mom, Sandy, who recently delivered more than 25 care bags to the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, bringing comfort and encouragement to patients facing head and neck cancer.

As a head and neck cancer survivor, Michelle knows firsthand the challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Inspired by her own journey, she founded Healing Voices, a nonprofit dedicated to providing essential products and compassionate support to others facing a similar diagnosis.

Michelle has turned her own experience into a meaningful way to give back, reminding others that they are not alone.

Thank you, Michelle and Sandy, for your kindness, generosity and commitment to making a difference in the lives of our head and neck patients!

Thanks to a $1,000 volunteerism grant from the IRONMAN Foundation in 2025, our Early Learning Center (ELC) at the Alfond Center for Health campus was able to purchase new outdoor playground equipment!

The new equipment has been a big hit, and the ELC children have loved climbing, sliding and spending time outdoors.

We’re grateful to the IRONMAN Foundation for supporting our youngest learners and helping create more opportunities for active outdoor play, exploration and fun!
