The Maine Water Utilities Association (MWUA) is a non – profit membership organization which was organized in 1925.

The Mission of the Maine Water Utilities Association is to represent the water works professional membership in advocating safe drinking water through education, legislation, policy and networking. At that time a core group of water superintendents recognized the need to meet on a regular basis, share information and ideas and lend mutual support. That group met regularly and became increasingly involved in matters affecting water utilities. Today, the basic concept remains largely unchanged. MWUA is an advocate for the water supply profession. We share experiences at bimonthly meetings, sponsor training sessions for members and provide mutual support. The networking and interaction are of great benefit to system operators in providing water service, while complying with stringent state and federal regulations. In February of each year we hold a waterworks trade show in Portland, Maine which draws exhibitors from the United States and Canada and waterworks professionals from throughout the Northeast.

💧 Why do our water rates keep going up?

It seems like the cost of everything is increasing. So, what’s the story with water?

There’s a lot happening behind the scenes at your local water utility. Aging infrastructure, increasing operating costs, new requirements, and the need to continually invest in the systems that deliver safe, reliable drinking water all play a role.

The Maine Water Utilities Association Public Awareness Committee has put together a new resource that helps explain some of the challenges facing Maine’s water utilities and why continued investment in our water infrastructure matters.

The Water Infrastructure Forum will bring together utility trustees, managers, operators, municipal leaders, regulators, consultants, and other industry stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with replacing and maintaining aging infrastructure.

🎬 Movie Night Next Thursday!

On behalf of the New England Environmental Finance Center (NEEFC), we're pleased to invite you to a free screening of the documentary Unless Something Goes Terribly Wrong next Thursday, October 1, at 5:45 pm at the Maine B**r Company in Freeport. The film offers an engaging look inside Portland's East End Wastewater Treatment Plant and highlights the skilled, dedicated professionals who keep this essential system running every day, often out of the public eye.
