Indigenous Peoples’ Day is an official city and state holiday in various localities in the United States. It celebrates and honors Indigenous American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures. Celebrated each year on the second Monday in October, it began as a counter-celebration held on the same day as Columbus Day, citing the lasting harm Indigenous tribes suffered because of Columbus’s contributions to the European colonization of the Americas. It will be interesting to follow the progression of this movement as the next generation is introduced to a more realistic, and difficult, version of our nation’s history.

Today marks three years since the attacks of October 7, 2023. We remember the lives taken, those who were held hostage, and the families and communities forever changed. As we remember, we reaffirm our commitment to stand against antisemitism and all forms of hatred, to choose compassion, and to honor the dignity and sacredness of every human life. May memory move us toward understanding, humanity, and peace.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month—a time to unite communities to raise awareness of bullying prevention. The movement was founded in 2006 by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center to change the belief that bullying is just a normal childhood rite of passage into a recognized public health and safety problem with a focus on reducing the negative mental health impacts tied to physical, verbal, social, and cyberbullying. World Day of Bullying is observed on the first Monday in October, encouraging people to wear blue to symbolize peace and solidarity. Learn more:

October is LGBT History Month. It marks and celebrates the lives and achievements of le***an, gay bisexual and transgender people in the United States. In 1994 Missouri high-school history teacher Rodney Wilson created the observance to build community and provide role models. Organizers chose October because public schools are in session, National Coming Out Day is held on October 11th, and it aligns with the anniversary of the first March on Washington for Le***an and Gay Rights in 1979. The LGBT History Month website will celebrate the achievements of 31 le***an, gay, bisexual, or transgender icons with a video, biography, bibliography, images, and resources. https://lgbthistorymonth.com
