Heat related deaths far outnumber deaths related to other extreme weather events. More than hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and other disasters.

Our neighborhoods are getting hotter, and a lack of trees is one of the reasons why.

Areas with fewer trees trap more heat, making streets, playgrounds, and homes much warmer. A recent study found that increasing the amount of greenery in urban areas could have helped prevent more than 1 million heat-related deaths around the world.

The difference between a tree-lined street and a concrete-only block can be felt immediately.
Every child deserves a cooler, healthier neighborhood.

Drawdown Georgia Climate Solutions and Equity grantees presented earlier this week at the Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems Funders (SAFSF) Forum in Savannah. Representatives from Georgia Organics , McIntosh SEED, and Berry Family Farms shared their experiences from implementing climate-smart agriculture and solar on South Georgia Farms. Joe Thomas from The Sapelo Foundation moderated the session and represented the funding cohort from two grants which also included funders from Ray C. Anderson Foundation , Wilbur and Hilda Glenn Family Foundation, Kendeda Fund, The R. Howard Dobbs, Jr. Foundation, Reilly Family Fund, Tull Charitable Foundation and Atticus Fund.

We're always excited when we see grantees in the spotlight. Thomasville Community Development Corporation (TCDC) is one of the Drawdown Georgia Climate Solutions and Equity Grant recipients that we have supported along with several other Georgia-focused foundations. The first part of the grant supported a 🫑🍅🥦 initiative with some of the same seniors that will be living in these new apartments, and the second portion of our grant will be focused on 🌞 solutions to help TCDC add features on the site. Congratulations to all who have worked with TCDC to reach this pivotal point with their project for seniors in Dewey City in Thomasville, GA. 🏘️

Today marks a historic milestone for our community. TCDC, the Douglass High School Alumni Association, Tapestry Development Corporation, and our many community partners have officially broken ground on the Douglass School Senior Apartments.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped make this moment possible, from residents, alumni, and community advocates to elected officials, funders, and project partners. Your vision and belief in this project helped transform a dream into reality.

This is more than the start of construction; it is the beginning of a new chapter for the historic Douglass campus, one that honors its legacy while creating quality housing opportunities for our seniors.

Together, we are building a stronger future because where we live shapes how we thrive.
