Stories of progress and resilience are at the heart of East Lake.

Thank you to 11Alive and award-winning journalist Joe Ripley for featuring longtime East Lake resident Pamela Davis in honor of Juneteenth.

A resident of East Lake for nearly 40 years, Ms. Davis reflected on the impact that the Lake Golf Club, the East Lake Family YMCA, and the East Lake Foundation have had on her family and community.

East Lake Foundation President & CEO, Ilham Askia, also shared reflections on the power of giving families “the freedom to choose how you define success for your family.”

These stories remind us that lasting change happens when communities have access to the resources, relationships, and opportunities they need to thrive.

What does Juneteenth mean to you?

When asked that question, here’s what Dedra Ridges, Program Director of East Lake Healthy Connections at the Lake Family YMCA shared:

“Juneteenth is a time to honor the resilience, strength, and contributions of African Americans throughout history. It represents freedom, progress, and the ongoing pursuit of equality and opportunity for all.”

A time to remember.

A time to celebrate.

A time to honor those who fought for freedom and justice.

A time to recognize how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go.

A time to come together as a community.

And a time to continue building a future where opportunity is within reach for everyone.

Thank you, Dedra, for your leadership and for championing the spirit of community and wellness.

“We were not the problem. The conditions were the problem.” — Eva Davis

As we celebrate graduations, new beginnings, and the start of summer, we’re reflecting on the power of opportunity.

Eva Davis’ words remind us that when people have the support and resources they need, transformation is possible.

Here’s to growth, possibility, and what’s next. 💙

Such a good day. From our history lesson Oakland Cemetery to our tasty lunch at Cocina Downtown, our team enjoyed a memorable outing for a day of connection and fun.

Special thanks to Mary Wren, Co-Chair of the East Lake Women’s Alliance and Oakland guide, for leading our tour through the cemetery.

Thanks to team member Jennifer McCrary for always capturing these moments.

We asked the community to bring the spirit of East Lake to life. You delivered!

Congratulations to Katrina Leakes, whose design has been selected as the official t-shirt for the 2026 Run for East Lake 5K & Fun Run presented by the East Lake Family YMCA and TOUR Championship!

Katrina is a longtime East Lake resident and receptionist at Sheltering Arms Early Education & Family Centers who saw the design contest in our newsletter. She answered the call and submitted a design that reflects the spirit, creativity, and movement that define East Lake.

Thank you to everyone who participated, shared, and supported this effort. We’re proud to celebrate your creativity and can’t wait to see this design on race day!

Special thanks to Lenny Ross, owner of Five Stripes Merch and a Start:ME Atlanta East Lake graduate, for helping to finalize the t-shirt.

Register to run or walk by June 21 for early bird pricing. Link in comments.

Calling all East Lake residents, partners, supporters, and community members. As we prepare to celebrate Juneteenth, we want to hear from you.

We especially want to know:

What does Juneteenth mean to you, and how do you plan to celebrate?

Whether it’s a sentence, a memory, a lesson, or a hope, we’d love to hear your perspective. Selected reflections will be featured as part of our Juneteenth celebration.

Honoring resident and community voices is something we care deeply about in our role as the East Lake community quarterback.

So together, let’s honor the past, celebrate the present, and continue building toward a brighter future.

The Charles R. Drew Charter School Class of 2026 still has us celebrating.

115 seniors graduated.

89 participated in early college or dual enrollment.

More than $19 million in scholarships awarded.

And 64 graduates have been part of the Drew community since kindergarten or earlier.

Each number represents a student, a family, a dream, and a future filled with possibility.

These accomplishments reflect years of investment in students and families through East Lake’s cradle-to-college and career education continuum.

The Class of 2026 is proof of what’s possible when young people have access to opportunity, encouragement, and support every step of the way.
