Studies show childhood academic achievement is one of the strongest predictors of economic stability, career mobility, and overall health as adults. For students to get the most out of their studies, however, they require overlapping systems of support that connect their school learning with their home and social lives.

We are excited to share an important evolution in our Families on the Move (FOTM) program!

Beginning this session, we’re transitioning from a three-times-per-week afterschool format to a twice-monthly Saturday Skill Builder workshop. This new format will ensure families with complicated schedules and transportation limitations are able to participate in the program. It will also allow us to provide free transportation for participants living in the 30315 zip code.

In honor of National Grandparents Day yesterday, let's give a shout out to all of the grandparents doing the hard work of raising second or even third generations of family members. Your strength and love don’t just strengthen your families, they strengthen our entire community.

One of our strategic priorities at Emmaus House is promoting economic opportunity in the communities we serve. Money doesn't just give us access to things, it gives us access to choice: how we spend our time and who we spend it with. By prioritizing economic self-sufficiency, we support our neighbors' dignity, happiness, and well-being. In 1972, Emmaus House played a strategic role in the desegregation of public schools by recruiting parents from the community to be monitors on school buses.

Emmaus House staff followed the school buses in vans, transporting the monitors back home in the morning, and returning them in the afternoon. This enabled several hundred Black youth to attend Northside schools, where they had access to more robust curriculums and learning resources.

Welcome back, students and educators! As we get settled into a brand new school year, let us remember that learning isn't just about passing tests, it's about opening doors. We're so grateful to all those responsible for helping our youth learn and grow, so they can enrich their lives, access opportunity, and ultimately, change the world. Wishing you all a very happy back-to-school!
