Today is the day!!! May 1st. May Day. International Workers’ Day. 📢
This day carries a long, global history rooted in resistance, labor, and collective power.
It traces back to 1886, when workers across the United States organized mass strikes demanding an 8-hour workday in one of the largest labor uprisings in the nation’s history.
The state responded with violent repression. In Chicago, in what became known as the Haymarket Affair, multiple days of protest ended with police attacking demonstrators and a bomb exploding.
Though no one knew who was responsible for the bomb, 8 labor organizers—targeted for their anarchist beliefs—were arrested and tried without evidence. 3 were sentenced to long prison terms. 4 were executed by hanging. Another who was condemned to death, died by su***de in prison.
In 1889, the International Socialist Conference declared May 1st a global day of worker solidarity to honor the Haymarket martyrs. From there, May Day became International Workers’ Day, an annual holiday marked by strikes, marches, and collective action across the world.
In the U.S., the ruling class deliberately suppressed the May Day anniversary, driven by conservative fears of its anti-capitalist, socialist, and anarchist roots. This meant that May Day is rarely taught in mainstream U.S. history narratives in our schools.
Yet around the world, May 1st remains one of the most powerful days of protest and collective action for human rights. It is a call to mobilize our people.
Here in Atlanta, Project South is part of the ATL Get Ready Team, and together we’ve been coordinating May Day solidarity actions to resist the exploitation & criminalization of our communities!
